Hello everyone, first post! I just threw in a k&N drop in air filter. I was browsing around here on Tacoma world and it looks like everyone is going with the afe. My question being, is the K&N drop in really that bad? I would love to hear any information anyone has, Thankyou!

Nope, just gotta make sure to clean it, use limited oil and it will be fine.

Most K&N problems are over oiling, and lack of return on the $.

I don't see any problem with your choice and you will be just fine. Sometimes they make a tiny bit more noise to boot.

Thanks for replying Bishop84. I will make sure to be conservative on the oil when the times comes to clean it. I can’t even tell the slightest difference in sound over the tone of my exhaust.

I went with AEM for my 4Runner. It was a good price, and seems to be a decent filter. According to this video, K&N might not be the best filter.

I would stay with stock paper filter. The oiled filters are crap at filtering contaminants and hardly give any benefits.

    Welcome to the forum :hattip:

Another vote for the stock paper filter, OEM Toyota or Wix brand would be my choices.

Why not just use an OEM filter and forget about it instead of overthinking it? :crapstorm:

Hi everyone I’m really sorry I never got back to anyone. I completely spaced so my apologies there. After my first response from Bishop84 I went ahead and got it. It didn’t take much convincing for me, I was pretty much already set on it. I’ve had it in there ever since, but I haven’t had to clean it yet. I appreciate all the feedback and when the time comes that I do have to clean it I guess I’ll really find out if I wasted my money or not. I’m a little more into the research here on Tacoma forum and I’m going to start another thread about headers if anyone here sees this and want to chime in please do so. I understand if nobody wants to respond to anything I post again. :(

Haven’t noticed any difference in performance. Purchased for the fact I wouldn’t have too again or at least for a very long time at least.

I put a K&N filter on a truck more than 20 years ago. At the time a conventional paper filter for most trucks ran $10ish. But one for this particular truck was $30, a K&N was $50. I figured long-term buying a $50 filter once and cleaning it instead of buying a $30 filter every few months made sense. And for that truck it did make sense financially.

I didn't see any difference in performance or fuel mileage. After reading up on their own advertising K&N saw minor improvements, but only when operating the engine at around 5000-6000 rpm. At slower engine speeds performance was no better than a conventional filter. In other words, a race car with a K&N filter MIGHT be 1-2 mph faster. And that MIGHT matter to a race car driver.

I sold that truck with the K&N filter in it and have not bought another. There is data showing that they don't filter the air as well and I decided keeping dirt out of the engine was more important.
