I can't fault them for trying but also it's like a 3/10 effort at best. The original movie Explorers look egregious, but at least they own it and go for it whole-ass. Mustard yellow wheels and all.

This is just a half-ass attempt. It should be green for dino jungles anyways.

Yeah, it's just a bummer it'll have to be done at all. Though that was one truck that'd be more than worth it.

Here's to hoping he hasn't been using the seat cushions as ashtrays.

Hmm, don't recall saying that, only that I liked my 2018 grille with a black surround...until I didn't.

    (thanks @Atl-atl)

So I've quite foolishly decided to see if my Celica is worth salvaging. A neighbor turned me on to car-part.com and I've found that a number of the necessary body panels are quite reasonably priced.

Plan will be to remove the hood and fenders and see how badly (if at all) the structural damage is. It mostly appears to be cosmetic aside from the cross beam where the hood latched.

If everything looks straight enough, then I'm gonna attempt to make it live again.

To my much more experienced mechanic friends on here who might read this: Aside from the fuel system, oil and maybe transmission fluids(?) What are other areas I'll have to dig into to get a car that's been sitting for five years running again?

With car prices being what they are, and the car having sentimental value to me (it was my first car) I'm set on trying to fix this one if I can do it.

Pic before the accident but after a decade of minimum wage abuse:

Is it a stick shift? Gear oil should be fine. Fuel system is gonna be the biggest challenge because that fuel is toast. There's some trick I can't recall exactly off the top of my head, but I believe you drop a little bit of ATF on top of the pistons and crank it to make sure all the rings are free and un-gooped. (This is before 1st start and 1st oil change since it's gonna end up in the oil pan)

I would give it a thorough inspection for any evidence of rodent damage. A nest or a pile of turds means you may start chasing electrical gremlins.

Hoses on a car that old are probably going to be near the end of their life, so don't be surprised if you have to start replacing cracked heater hoses and/or see a bit of coolant on the ground.

^^marvel mystery oil. Pull the plugs, squirt a bunch in. Let it soak a day or more. Pull ign fuse. Disconnect fuel line from tank, and see if the pump work and just hose it all into a can to dispose. Get fresh fuel in.
hand crank with a breaker bar to see if everything loosened up with the mystery oil. Then if good, crank with battery no fuel no spark though. Then add fuel and spark.
As said, expect hoses to be brittle.
Also, check the coolant, if its muddy orange then theres a ton of rust in the system and it will clog quickly.

I'm hopeful there won't be too many rodents (i.e. none at all). It's been parked in a driveway and we don't have a lot of rodents in the neighborhood. The house that it's parked at belongs to a family friend and has been vacant for years so if anything, they're all huddled up in there.

Sadly the joke I always made about the car was that "Everything is manual... except the tranmission." If this goes well and I can get it going, I'd like to do a manual swap down the road (perhaps paired with a 4A-GZE, but a guy can dream).

My first objective is going to see if my boss will let me occupy some space in his massive back yard so I can work on it since the HOA will throw a tizzy if I take it apart in the driveway. If hoses and some fuel lines/pump are the worst I have to worry about, then I'm feeling good.

Oof well a couple months back I did put a little gas and some Marvel's in and tried to start it from there. The tank was on E when it last ran, I made sure to try to burn off all the gas in there before the battery died.

Thank you both for the replies.

I'm a bit of a drive from you, but I have room and a gated back yard. Plenty of dirt roads too. Far east side.
