hey @Texoma I was wondering to see if you'd give opinion on my videos about the carrier bearing. Just trying to see if I should get it replaced to try and solve some of the shifting/unload feeling I get after a second or so of coming to a stop. It has some movement when I press the driveshaft up but I'm not sure how much movement it should have.

I've seen it mentioned on a few threads here and there. But never saw anyone post a video of the carrier and people would just say "make sure they ubolts are tight", well shit they are. And, I don't see the axle moving along the ubolts, but the rubber bushing in the CB sure does move, but not sure if that's just normal or if mine is excessive. I did spray it with some lithium and it seems like I don't get the unload "bump" like I did before. Maybe a bit of lube fixed it

Just not sure if it is a characteristic of the Tacoma or if it is because it is lifted or the CB is toast.

Is your AC on when you come to a stop?

Have you checked your transmission fluid level lately?

When's last time throttle body and Maf were cleaned?

 

What did you spray with lithium?

 

The AC is on, usually is always on. I drained and refilled the trans a few thousand miles ago, followed the refill process, it's not overfilled or underfilled. TB and MAF was about 6k miles ago.

I bought the truck in January, as far as I know it has always done this randomly. I replaces the leaf springs with new OME, greased the bushings as required, torqued everything to spec. Front end is tight as well.

I sprayed the rubber bushing of the carrier bearing with silicone spray, not lithium. I misspoke.

 

You may need to replace the center support bearing now that you've sprayed it with lube, especially if it's a 2wd truck. If it's 4wd, the bearing should be sealed good enough. But the bearing does ride inside the bushing.

Try turning the AC off and see if that makes a difference. I know, that sucks, but your ac is tied in to the throttle so that way when the compressor engages, the rpm kicks up to compensate, that's why I asked about TB and MAF.

Overfill just slightly on your trans is not bad att all, actually may be good. Underfilled just a slight bit can cause issues such as this.

Is your truck 2wd or 4wd?

Ok, so with 4wd, your slip yoke is between the diff and center support. Movement is normal with rubber bushings. Excessive movement is not good. Touve got 3 more bushings that can be moving as well. The engine mounts and trans mount. Have you checked their condition?

Also, when you say you torqued to spec, what spec? Factory ubolt spec is too low, what did you torque ubolts to? How bout all the leaf bolts?

 

The engine and trans mounts look good. Rubber is not broken and the engine doesn't seem to move much when I pry to see if there is movement.

The ubolts are something like 75ft lbs? I can't remember but yeah I know the spec sheet is way low. Leaf bolts are 90ft lb, I think. I can't remember but it was what the spec listing showed. I tightened the rear bushings while it was on the ground. I'll recheck everything.

I can move the rubber on the bearing up slightly, maybe 1/4 inch. What I don't know is if that is excessive, and the bushing does not look broken. I'm thinking the slip yoke may be binding at times and then releases. I should get a GoPro and drive around to see if I can capture it.

 

85ft#'s min for ubolts. Shackles n leaf mounts are good at 90ft#'s.

Support bushing can give some play and be fine.

Slip yoke may be dry and binding, lube it with the recommended lube.

 

Ok cool. I'll recheck ubolts. How do I lube the slip yoke?

 

You have to take it apart. Easiest way is to unbolt the driveshaft from the pinion flange and pull it out. Make sure to mark the orientation of the shaft at the slip yoke.
