JD Power is pretty unscientific in what they consider "dependability". I wouldn't put any weight in them at all.

 

jd power ratings go to the highest bidder. like politics, they are all paid off in one way or another.

Had a 94 explorer that i took to 262k miles, an 01 xterra 236k all on original engine and transmissions the only common denominator between these 2 vehicles was me and how i took care of them. Im sure barring a fluke that this truck will reach the 200k's

 

Hell with 5-7 k oil changes it should do 500k miles minimum. I did 15k oil changes on my on truck, and its still going strong over 300k. After all its a toyota.

 

To be perfectly honest, the 2016 launch did not go well. Some of that spilled into the early-2017 MY. Then, 2018 had some massive changes with the TSS-P integration, along with many TSBs toward the end of the 2018 MY that finally addressed customers' biggest issues.

The plain fact is that the 3rd Gen section quieted down about running issues once those TSBs hit the street in mass. This place is now pretty quiet, and we argue about silly stuff, like the oil filter cartridge and wind noise.

Wind noise is the one thing I would like to solve, especially from near the a pillar

Couple of recalls. Oil and filter changes and just changed the brake pads. So far so good.


Over 1.5 million 3rd Gens on the road in the US alone. Not a lot of evidence (short of the recalls) to suggest major problems with the 3.5. Microcosm here is probably mostly built on folks seeking assistance.

 

It's as regular as the sun rising and setting lol. You'd think they would have enough to yap about in their own "lane".
Meh, just more grass that you learn to push down into the noise floor.

 

The 3.5 is a decent motor. Not a great motor for a truck tho. Motor wont blow up but plan on the chance of an expensive repair before 100k. Either timing cover reseal or valve/head issue.

 

The timing and or valve head issues are so rare. There is no reason to "prepare"

 

Only wind noise i hear in my 2020 is when the front air dam is removed, otherwise its a fairly quiet cab.

My service writer said they do quite a bit of timing cover reseals both under and out of warranty.

 

From an engineering standpoint there are just so many more instruments, sensors and components on gen3 vs gen2 there’s slim chance it will be the same. That being said after 270k on my 05 I’m waiting on my 2022 to come in! Planning on another 15 years with the new taco.

 

The flip side is - one service writer in one location vs? How does that make it likely? Without verified data it's all a guess really.

 

Whomever buys your 05 will be driving it to work the same day that your 2022 is at the dealer with weird noises/trouble codes.
