I was in 4LO most of the time if we were going slow. I liked the extra torque to get around. I had the rear locker engaged most of the time. I only used the front locker when I was breaking trail. Going down hill we were going 25-30mph so I was in 4HI.

Thanks - I keep getting mixed messages about what mode is preferred when running through deep snow (offroad). Some people say 4LO has too much torque from the start which would cause you to spin your tires while others say 4HI will allow your tires to spin too quickly.

Still up in the air really on what's the best combination.

I prefer 4LO in deep snow. I like having the lower gear since it allows you to crawl on the snow instead of spin down into the snow. 4LO will not allow you to spin the tires on it's own. You regulate how much throttle you give. Don't give it too much and you won't be spinning. It all really depends on your set up and the conditions.

As fast as Eric was driving I'm pretty sure he was in 4HI since I had to shift out of 4LO a few times to catch up to him

I ran 4low the entire day from the minute we left pavement, to the time we got back to it. :D
I like the torque of 4low, plus in that deep of snow its too hard on the clutch/tranny to use 4hi for me. Also theres times where 1st in 4hi isnt quite enough, but shifting to 2nd bogs the engine down so running 2nd and 3rd in low was what I did most of the time.

I guess you just drive fast. Every time I stopped I was switching out of 4LO to catch up and then I would switch back.

Also, as a side note, when you're pushing that much snow you kind of want some torque to help you.

Awesome. Were you using any traction aids like ATRAC or TRAC (non-TRD OR yellow wire mod for 4LO) in conjunction with lockers, when needed?

BTW - Sorry for all the questions.

I don't have ATRAC or TRAC. ATRAC is worthless in anything but dry conditions. I don't care what anyone else says. I've had experience with ATRAC. I'm not sure what the 4LO wire mod is.

No lockers or electronic traction control here. Open front diff, and factory limited slip in the rear, with tires aired down to 8psi.
With this setup and a bit of driving skill my truck went everywhere just fine.

probably meant so you could run the locker in hi since it's limited to low range from the factory isnt it?

Maybe. In which case my lockers work whenever I want them to.

By the way the tube is going to get cut off. It's too warped looking.

There was some nasty clay stuff in the pit. I'm actually surprised he got around so easily.

I've been in there with no snow- just wet, nasty clay and its bad. Looks ok on top, but is soupy/nasty/sticky underneath when there isnt snow or its not dried out like in the middle of summer.

Sorry, the yellow wire mod is for the 09+ trucks that are not TRD OR. It enables TRAC in 4LO, which is normally only active in 4HI/2HI. With TRAC being a less capable version of A-TRAC.

Arent new MT/Rs a unidirectional? Old one were not and I was not sure about buying another set for my pickup thinking they are now unidirectional. I dont see an arrow on the sidewalls but thread looks like its one way only.

They are not directional tires. They have an inside and an out side. The smaller tread strip goes towards the inside and the bigger lugs go towards the outside.

This is what it should look like. The smaller tread strip always goes towards the inside. This way you can still rotate your tires and it'll always be towards the inside.

That is wierd, atleast do they sell left and right or its one size fits all. Reason why Iask is if you have V shape in thread you need to mount tires so they look like this

    V------V
    If you mount
    A------V

Then A will push water, slush into the center of the tire instead pushing to outside.
Do you get any extra hydroplaning or slippage on the side with A thread? Thats why I though they are unidirectional. :notsure:

I understand what you're saying but I'm not sure it makes much of a difference. I don't get any hydroplaning or slippage. I've been very happy with the performance in wet and snowy roads. They're much better than any other MT I've run. The tires are all the same. There is no right or left side.
