Puffing blue smoke on start up is not normal of any modern vehicle. It shouldn't be ignored.

Seen bad/worn valve seals on engines with a lot of sustained high rpm use.

Usually if over a certain amount dealers need to provide a 30 day warranty.

I would look into this if I was the OP. Every state is different but worth a shot. Or at least approach the dealer and see if they will help.

When I did valve seals we had an air chuck welded on to a threaded pipe. Screw it in to the spark plug threads and attach air line. Air in the cylinder allows you to compress valve springs and change seals. I assumed the post I quoted was saying if all cylinders checked out OK it would point to valve seals and I would agree but I would think seals would last much longer than that.

Agreed! It's more easy to find a nun strip club, then a first gen with less than 200k.

I would be VERY surprised if this were valve seals. A faulty PCV valve I could believe, but I don't think I've seen one post here about failing third gen valve seals, and this place is most definitely the place where people come to complain about Tacoma issues.. How long does the smoke last on start on-up, and as mentioned above, are you sure it's oil smoke?

Its possible at that mileage to be valve seals. My brothers v6 highlander had that problem at 90k. The service manager claimed it was common for those motors to have them when they were geared to run nearly 3k rpm at 70 mph. Toyota has not built that type of drivetrain since.

Run the engine without the gas cap on so the check engine light comes on, bring back to the dealer and say you're trying to run it through emissions but the check engine light won't go away and the exhaust is spewing dirty smoke..then pull out the paperwork and pray you're in a 30-60 month warranty with the dealer.

Also thinking OP bought this privately...how much was it?

My first thought would be the low tension piston rings (mainly oil control ring) clogged up with sludge /soot. Not knowing the vehicle history and oil brand/weight/type/change interval leads me to this THEORY.

If it were rings it would smoke all the time. Not just at start up.

Not necessarily. Once engine and cats reached operating temp, smoke would decrease to nil (if oil consumption was minor).

edit - I should add that there are a 'zillion' Camry's driving around with hardly a puff of blue smoke, yet they drink nearly a quart of oil per 5000 miles. Some more than that.

I got it from a Dealership not Toyota.
It has recently done 81k miles service from Toyota
