Speaking of 4 roses, I’ve been reading up on the single barrel and the small batch select. Why is the small batch select more expensive? Aged longer? And what is up with the 10 different single barrel recipes, that’s unique.

I have yet to try 4 roses and based on what I’m reading I’m very tempted to go procure one of each bottle.

Surprised considering your experienced bourbon pallete. Definitely worth sampling. I took the cue from others recommendation. I wasn’t disappointed with the 4R SiB and will definitely get another this week.

Buffalo Trace night for me as well. Polished off the remainder of a 1.75

I tend to find something I like, and get several bottles of it, so it takes me longer to get around to the next thing. I don’t know why but I’ve had an aversion to trying 4 roses, maybe something stupidly subconscious like I didn’t like the bottle art. I think it’s the same for Bulleit, just don’t like the look of the bottle.

I’ve read more info on the single barrels over the past 30 minutes, and one thing I can say is I’m not down for the two varieties made using a yeast that produces a minty flavor.

I've never met a 4R SiB I didn't like. My current bottle has about 2 pours left, so I'll be due for a new one soon.

It's a favorite along with Larceny when I want a sweet dram.

Dip into that Blan'uns yet or still staring at it, waiting for the right time?

Give 4R a shot. You might be surprised.

If my opinion means anything….get it.

I look down my nose at most offerings from 4R but the SiB is the Tits McGee.

I have a few bourbons that I keep on hand and don’t tap until I replace. It’s one of them. It’s a fine pour.

An excuse to buy a new bottle?

    Done and done.

Got a particular recipe you like best?

Hmm… no recipe just a couple regulars I like to have on hand for sipping. Specifically, 4R SiB, Buffalo Trace, Angels Envy, John J. Bowman (though that’s impossible anymore), Eagle Rare, Russels Reserve and Blanton’s. EW BiB has joined the chat.

4R SiB is a good $45 bottle that is readily available. If you don’t like it, well, there’s worse things to use as mixers.601CCC3D-86F0-4570-AE39-2301715E8BAC.jpg

What are the two bottles behind the Blanton’s?

This is what I mean by recipe for 4 roses SB:

    Mash bill:
    • E = Mash bill: 75% corn, 20% rye, 5% malted barley
    • B = Mash bill: 60% corn, 35% rye, 5% malted barley
    Yeast:
    • K = Yeast: rich in spiciness, full bodied
    • Q = Yeast: slightly fruity, spicy, medium bodied
    • O = Yeast: is floral (rose petal), spicy, medium bodied
    • F = Yeast: is more herbal
    • V = Yeast: is delicate fruit, spicy and creamy
So, we've got two different mash bills, and five different yeast strains, leaving us with ten unique bottlings. These notes are from Four Roses:
    1. OBSV: Delicate fruit and rye
    2. OBSK: Rye and baking spice
    3. OBSO: Rich fruit
    4. OBSQ: Rye and light floral character
    5. OBSF: Delicate rye and mint
    6. OESV: Delicate fruit and caramel
    7. OESK: Baking spice
    8. OESO: Rich fruit and vanilla
    9. OESQ: Delicate grains and light floral character
    10. OESF: Herbs and mint

Now I’m reading that you always get OBSV unless you get your hands on a private barrel select. This would be hugely disappointing if true.

@Hook78 you just blew my mind and made me realize I’m not taking my collection serious enough. Let me study up a bit before I answer.

Behind the Blanton’s is Buffalo Trace in a fancy decanter and Woodford Reserve Masters Collection Five Malt Stouted Mash.

Lol! The latter. Probably will do so Labor Day weekend. For something so difficult for me to get intend to want to covet. But it’s meant to be enjoyed and once it’s out I can start another hunt!
BTW, my hat’s off to you @jandrews for coming through and getting me a bottle! Cheers!

To be fair, my bourbon collection is my second love. Beside my bourbon cabinet are 3 of these…don’t get me started on my Lego’s.

    Edit: yep I’m a Gen X nerd.

It's true. Store picks will have the different recipes but, for the most part, standard off the shelf 4R is OBSV. OBSV is pretty good.
