I've had one dealership tell me recently that if you live more than 60 miles from the dealership they add some sort of markup - they didn't give me a number, but I told them I wouldn't buy from them. Another dealer told me that if you are out of their area (they didn't define what that was), you go on the second tier wait-list for allocations, meaning anyone local bumps you down the list regardless of how long after you they got on the list.

For real, the used market is insane! I bought my '22 for LESS than the certified low mileage 2019-2020s I was looking at from dealerships. Used were being sold several thousand above their original sticker price (often the original sticker was in the glovebox). Bonkers. I totally agree with you, repos are going to hit the market sooner or later and the used dealers are going to be stuck wishing they'd been willing to deal.

Unfortunately, Toyota just randomly includes whatever options they feel like. So when your dealer gets an allocation for a truck that comes close to what you want, you either take it with potentially a bunch of stuff that you don't want, or you wait for the next allocation that comes close.

Dealerships do not make a ton of profit on a new vehicle sale (unless they screw with MSRP). Certainly not enough to keep the doors open by itself. The profit comes in through the service department. If you are "out of area" they probably won't get the future service business so they stab you on vehicle price.

Oh interesting, that does make sense. Still, I didnt encounter what the poster above has encountered, and I also didnt encounter anyone adding a dealer markup over MSRP. Seems like I lucked out with geography.

OP - I'm in North Georgia too. The dealers in Cobb, Cherokee and surrounding areas add a $2500 additional dealer mark up. Plus, since Georgia is in the Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) selling area, SET adds " TOYOGUARD(R) Platinum $699" on each of their new vehicles, which includes 2 Oil and Filter Changes at any Toyota Dealer, Four Tire Rotations, Roadside and Rental Car Assistance, Exterior Paint Sealant and Interior Protector. Most of the Tacomas I've seen in the area dealers have between 7-10 options on them that SET added.

I have been traveling out of state for work, and found with a dealer in eastern PA and got a Tacoma SR5 DCSB 4X4 for LESS than a similar 2WD in Georgia. (I mentioned the Toyotaguard Platinum to my selling dealer in PA, and he had no idea what I was talking about.) They took care of the GA taxes and plates, and I just got my plate in the mail.

Recommend that you call around various dealers to see what allocations they have coming in and if they don't have anything, ask what it takes to be "put on their list" so they call you when something similar is allocated to what you want. I'd even look out of state (and out of SET's area) and make it into a mini vacation when you go to pick up your truck. Good luck !

Not completely correct; my Tacoma will be built within the next week or two and the temporary VIN clearly shows it is a 2022 model. That said, I'm thinking there is a fair chance at least some of the September 2022 builds will end up being 2023 models.

What a mess....I understand that a Tacoma truck ain't a Rolls-Royce but if I'm going to spend close to 50 grand it's going to be the truck I want, not just what ever they have. If I can't find what I want maybe I'll just restore my 99.

I have been checking with the local dealers that are on the "Sell at MSRP..." list on this site. Some are adding junk fees close to $2500 but not calling it "market adjustment" and some are actual keeping their fees closer to $500. One of the dealers in TN I contacted was up front and asked if I was local....When I told him I was from Georgia he said they would have to add 10% of the MSRP to the deal.

There is a very large Toyota dealership close to my office and I went yesterday during lunch to test drive a used 21 TRD Pro....It was already sold by the time I got there. It was listed at $59,995 plus all the junk fees. I just wanted to check out the color (lunar rock) and see the leather interior. They were slammed, but the salesman took the time to drive me around the lot showing me other trucks and cars that were lunar rock in color and he knew he wasn't going sell me a truck that day.

When I bought my first 3rd gen back in 2016, I was able to find plenty of stock to choose from and was able to get the exact color and options i wanted for a few grand off msrp.

About 6 months ago, I wanted another 3rd gen and imagine my surprise when it was nearly impossible to find the exact color and options I wanted. It was take what you can get. I waited for lunar with tech and imagine my surprise when a canceled wait list came up. The only thing I wanted that the truck didn't have was LED headlights, but I can buy those and and put them on.

    Strange times we live in.

The 3 dealerships that I ended up having search for allocations for me all said that if they could get an allocation that had the right model, color, transmission, and bed size, that the other options could be changed.

So the allocation for the truck that I bought had a few of the things that I wanted and a few that I didn't want. I was able to take off what I didn't want and add what I did want, which gave me the exact truck I was looking for.

But I was also told they were getting that allocation around the middle of April and the build date was 04/29. So obviously to be able to do this, you would have to be talking to the dealership before it is built, but there might also need to be a certain amount of time before it is scheduled to be built as well?

There was a electric lime trd pro down in Central Florida on Saturday for MSRP. They would not sell it to me because their policy is only to sell to Florida residents. Was livid to say the least...

There is craziness going on for sure. I have two dealers within three miles of me in either direction. Dealer one is working with me, and allowed me to get on the list for a TRD pro.
The other dealer blew me off months ago, now they told me they do not do any discussion with potential customers on the TRD pro. They are saying you need to stop and see when it shows up, if you’re lucky, because they’re not telling you when it’ll arrive (shady to say the least).
So happy to have my dealership, thanks to my brother who works for their Cadillac dealer. Otherwise who knows what I’d. e dealing with

To the OP, as its been stated, unless you find one thats available (someone backed out), youre probly SOL on the 22's. Even then, you might have to make changes to what you will "settle" for. I tried to keep my needs very minimal. Wanted an AG Sport or OR with almost zero options. Thats about as picky as I got. And it worked. I found one not spoken for and actually got a pretty great deal within 20 miles from my home. Just saying, the pickier you are, the longer it seems you will have to wait. Plenty of talk about that throughout this forum.

I would wait for the 23!! Good possibility the last year. My local dealer being a repeat customer will get me a Pro at msrp. I may end up putting my name on one if I decide to sell my LunaRock tundra Pro. Tossing it around. Also I’m no hurry if I decide to get one. I don’t care if it’s a year. I have a truck to use. And plenty of time to sell it if I choose.

3 weeks ago I was sitting on the couch, sorta shopping for a G3. Dealer 30 miles down the road listed 6 of them with MT's "in transit" so I emailed on Saturday asking ETA. Walked in and talked to them the Tuesday after the email. 3 of the 6 were sold already by then.

The one I wanted - wasn't so I bought it.

Built last Tuesday. Be interested to know if it ends up a 22 or a 23. Temporary VIN really doesn't mean much - it's just digits as a placeholder for tracking to the build date.

Dealer added items were more expensive than the items already on the build sheet from Toyota - someone mentioned all weather floor mats as an example. Basically - I had to take the truck as built, couldn't add anything to it to be done at Toyota - would be done at the dealer. Essentially Toyota build it how they like - allocates to a dealer and you live with it unless the dealer can find another to swap with to get you what you "must have".

The one I wanted - had basically everything I really wanted. Lunar Rock, TRD Off Road, MT, premium package, advanced tech, door sill/all weather mats, LEDs and bed lights. They had a Pro coming I would have bought but it's the lime green color and that's not my jam.

I'm still waiting for it to show up at the dealer - supposed to be about 3 weeks I guess. The only thing I MIGHT add is the auto tailgate lock and the lift kit. Undecided on lift. Yeah - I know, can get similar for less but I like the idea of 3/36k warranty, they handle the TSS issues, new grill and fresh alignment after delivery to the dealer etc.

Actually the VIN means everything; if there is an "N" in the 10th position of the VIN, it is a 2022 (which I suspect yours is as mine hasn't been built yet and it is also a 2022), and if there is a "P" in the 10th position, then it is a 2023.

I get what you're saying. I'm saying a "temporary vin" has no legal basis or meaning because the vin stamped on the truck will not be the same as the temp given to dealers ahead of time once the truck is built. They could easily decide to make that N into a P should they want to at the factory. Which is why I'm curious as to what will show up. Likely a 22, probably a 22 but possibly a 23 (assuming my options carry over to the 23 model year)

I know of no bank nor insurance company willing to quote or finance a temp vin because of that.
