Is it really just one adapter? Have you seen TFLs Alaska trip? Also they didn’t forget to bring the adapter. They didn’t even own one. There’s that reading comprehension stuff again.

The "should have" is for a reason. The problems these people encountered aren't new. Most people know about them. EVs have limitations. This isn't news.

Where I live airports have plugs already mainly for block heaters. You can plug an EV into that for the week or two. My old gas truck wouldn't stand a chance of starting after sitting for a week in the winter.

These are known issues. The article, to me, shows how dumb the people are. They should have read some more articles on EVs before they set out to write this one. Though I suppose, just maybe, they went out looking for a story.

If you want to cover all your charge station bases I think you’d only need two adapters. One to chademo and one for the Tesla plug. For added capability out away from built up areas having a 50 amp and 30 amp RV adapters would be a decent idea and not take up much space.

You guys are insane. They planned the trip out and should have had plenty of range to get there and back without charging. No one knew they would lose that much charge just sitting there, not even Rivian.
Here in the US we don’t have outlets for block heaters at the airport. There may be a couple spots with EV chargers but you shouldn’t be a douche and leave your car parked at one for your entire trip.

Eh, I have a tesla adapter for L2, it's basically the only one you 'need'. Kinda tiny and fits underneath the drivers seat. Used it yesterday (was down to about 5 miles of range, J1772 charger was in use so I just used the tesla one. :p I think I pissed off a tesla owner or two)

    ...

It's a pretty bad drain, though, definitely a problem if your onboard systems are using that much electricity when idle.

If they knew they were losing range overnight, and knew it could get cold, and didn't bring the correct gear, then I don't know what to say. This is a case where an EV is obviously not the best use. Loss of range in cold is something that has been know for a long time. It's the reason I didn't use lithium-ion drill batteries at work for the longest time. I knew this a decade ago. Smarter people have known it for longer.

I'm not "insane." I'm not the one posting articles on the issues of EVs like no one knows about them.

Seems like an issue with the truck, an issue with planning, and not knowing your equipment were to blame here.

I know I've had some dumb moments in a gas vehicle out in the woods hoping I'd get back. Though the gas truck admittedly becomes less of a brick when it runs out of fuel than an EV.

The US definitely has airports with plugs... But its obviously a northern thing. They are only 120v but every stall has one. You're not blocking anyone by using them. It would be enough juice to maintain your battery level at least.

I’m pretty confident that no one here knew you would lose 121 miles of range just parked. That’s crazy. Is the Rivian a warm weather vehicle only. It’s an adventure vehicle that fails at adventure. In regards to your lithium drill batteries not working in the cold, I use them on my auger for ice fishing without any problems.

In reality the Rivian is an adventure vehicle in marketing mostly. I personally wouldn't do much adventuring with it. I agree it mostly fails at adventure.

If you read on real-world usage of EVs you can find plenty of cases where the vehicles lose a ton of range in the cold. Sure they didn't know exactly how many miles but they went off into the mountains anyway without testing it. The amount is probably higher than I would have guessed but it's not shocking. Thinking they'd get "most" of it back with regenerative braking was foolish too. Seems they knew nothing about the vehicle they were driving.

In regards to your ice auger... I bet it does work. The lithium ion batteries today are better than the old ones. My drills are all lithium ion. But just because it "works" doesn't mean it doesn't lose capacity. It doesn't shock me when my drills are dead in the morning in the winter or that I can drill half the holes that I would in the summer.

The guys that wrote this article seem like the ones that would go ice fishing, with a battery with a half charge they took out of a warm garage, and then be shocked when they can't go fishing on day four. There's a reason why, where I live at least, most of us use gas augers still. But happily drilling holes with no issues doesn't make for a good story.

Up in Alaska we have plug ins at all the airports and for most employees at businesses. Obviously a different world compared to the lower 48 but that’s still the US.

I won’t blame the guys for not knowing they’d loose 75% of the battery sitting still and not using it. That’s a definite problem that Rivian needs to address.

I think you're really batacoma . You know it's okay to be wrong. When I'm wrong I admit it. You can't stand to be wrong. I see they bought one. If they test electric vehicles they should have been prepared. BUt no one is perfect. Just poor planers.
