Tractors are multi purpose machines, after the work is done they can be a footstool.

    Short story.

My truck doesn't have AC and I have 4 lawns to mow, it is annoying to tow the ZT around once a week with no AC. I've been watching craigslist.org for a nice mower platform that needs an engine or simple rebuild. Found a John Deere Spinsteer SST-18 Vtwin 18hp with 48" deck, for cheap they said it overheated on the left cylinder. The mower had been sitting for at least a year with flat tires and no battery. I tried to get it to start when I checked it out but it would not turn over. Brough it home and started disassembling it. The further I got into it the more questions I had. I realized that the engine only had 186 hours on it. So it could be something like a bend pushrod or bad piston ring... Every thing was within spec! Crosshatching looked great on both cylinders, the valves were within spec, everything about this made me think it was something stupid I was missing. The cylinders heads were caked with soot like it was running really rich. So I pull the dip stick... the engine oil is 30% over full. I pull the drain plug drain it off and top her to the correct level and I am off and running with a nice older machine.

Now I don't have to tow around the ZT in the hot and humid weather.

There are multiple things still remaining on this project to make it really a good buy but for now it works and will get me through what I presume will be the next 5 years +.

It needs a new seat or at least a seat cover and new mower blades.

Same thing with aluminum foil! My GF buys the dollar store stuff, I buy the Reynolds HD stuff. Guess who's veggie pouch never falls apart on the grill? LOL!

My old faithful White riding mower failed me today, she cranked but no start. I had the choke on while cranking so I thought I foulded the plug. I pulled it and it was wet, so some brake cleaner and a wire brush had to looking purdy again.. still wouldn't start. I pulled the plug and grounded against the engine block and cranked- no spark. WTF.. I will have to investigate closer on another day. I got the Crapsman to fire up and cut the grass. I swear that I hear some bottom end noise on that turd. I'll run it until it blows up!

@RustyGreen @koditten and any of you other small engine heads.

When I took apart this B&S 18hp Vtwin I should have had 2 steel and 2 aluminum, instead I have 3 aluminum and 1 steel. Would anyone see an issue with having an aluminum on the intake instead of steel like the manual says it should be?

Thanks in advance for your input. I ran the engine for about 20 minutes so far, and like a dunce I forgot to use assembly grease so I will likely pull it back apart this weekend and add assembly grease, and I could easily replace the one aluminum intake push rod for a steel if I had one, just want to know if I should.

Most shops switch them so both are steel.

Interesting. I was thinking of ordering 1 of each so I either have it the way its supposed to be or all aluminum. I can't see any advantage to either method. The rod is not in a journal the valves springs are the same part number so there isn't any strength difference. Maybe aluminum for heat dissipation?

    :notsure:

As far as I have found the steel is slightly cheaper.
