It's actually a switch, not a button. The fireplace at my grandma's old house had a remote control with a button...

Phew..I've been a good boy for the last 20 years at least.

Nice, I could almost knock down some walls and ride my bike in the house

My folks have a gas one in their townhouse and like it. Rarely if ever did they use the regular 'places in our old houses unless we lost power in the cold.

Charlie, I'm not a lawyer but from certain life experiences and having friends who are in law enforcement would like to offer some advice. Be very cautious about posting something like this on a forum. Heaven forbid anything should ever happen that actually required you to defend yourself with a weapon like that but if you did a post like this can have a bad way of coming back to haunt you even though your statement clearly shows your concern is for your own safety.

I know you have certain issues with dealing with police and that's fine. I would suggest asking your father to reach out to the local police and explain that you have Helen's permission to be there during her absence. Explain the interaction with Joel and the phone call to Helen where she has indicated Joel does not have permission to be on her property. I would imagine your local cops are aware of Jim's passing and once alerted to Helen being out of town could easily make a pass through her area while on patrol. Perhaps you could help her install a wireless camera system that would allow her to monitor the place and also record anything that might happen both when she's away and for the overnight hours while she's sleeping? I recently installed a Blink camera system that uses a USB memory stick so there's no subscription fees and it's about as simple as you can get to hook up provided she has wi-fi in her home.

I would agree with you, but I don't think it's gonna come to me defending myself. As long as he only waters the plants, I don't think we're going to be intervening; Joel is an alcoholic and a drug addict, but surprisingly not a thief.

When Jim was still alive, I was trying to get them to buy a Ring doorbell. I'm going to make a point of driving by the house twice today to make sure all is good. I told Helen's neighbors across the street about the Joel situation as well, so they know he's not supposed to be there.

Joel got banned from the bar where I used to work in either late 2016 or early 2017; I don't know exactly what he did, but I believe it was a number of things that led to the proverbial straw breaking the camel's back. He would show up several times a week, get drunk, and make a jackass of himself. This one bartender named Gary said he didn't want him there anymore, everyone else agreed, and he was banned.

Joel showed up on Saint Patrick's Day in 2017 and tried to get in. Our bouncers obviously did not let him in and told him to leave the property. He argued that he was standing on a public thoroughfare and refused to leave. Technically, the alley on which the bar is located was public, but then Joel took it a step further and pretended to slip and fall on a snow bank in front of the bar. He refused to get up and just lay there pretending to be injured. The cops were called, and they ended up dragging him away in handcuffs. He did attempt to sue the bar for personal injury, but the owner of the bar is a lawyer and basically told him to go to hell.

Joel continued to strut past the property on after the incident March, in a misguided attempt to antagonize the staff, but he realized we were ignoring him and stopped.

I worked at a venue called Puck as a barback for four years. Joel got banned from another bar called Chambers, which is actually two bars, in two buildings, owned by the same guy and operating on the same liquor license. Our very own @Gr8fl's brother, who is also on TW but I can't remember his username, bartended at Chambers for a while. Joel was in the part of Chambers known as The Other Side, and he though it would be funny if he dropped dry ice in his drink. This filled the entire space with a toxic cloud, which led to the evacuation of the bar, and since this was not Joel's first incident there they banned him.

And as mentioned above, there was the time that Joel purposely jumped in front of my truck in the Puck parking lot because he was likely hammered and thought it was funny.

Joel was infamous for his antics by then, and when I told one of the bouncers at Puck the story, he said I should have done everybody a public service and run him over. That's how much Doylestown Borough loves Joel!

Stay far away from people like this. Even if they don’t win. The expense and time isn’t worth it.

I can not stand sue happy people.
And I personally think there isn’t enough being done to those that file frivolous lawsuit against people.

Joel wasn't the only person to attempt something like that while I was working at Puck, either...

There was this fairly wealthy older woman (maybe 60s) who had a Puggle named Rocco, and she was very well-known in Doylestown before she ultimately drank herself to death. Her brother took ownership of Rocco after she died; I forget what her real name was, but everyone at Puck knew her as "Pug Lady" because of her dog...

Anyway, she routinely showed up at Puck on weekends and got sloshed. One time, she showed up with Rocco. Dogs were only allowed on the patio when it wasn't crowded. She convinced one of our bouncers to watch Rocco for what she promised would only be a few minutes while she had a couple drinks and said hello to some friends. A few minutes turned into well over an hour and she got totally annihilated. She was ultimately made to leave...

Some time later, she showed up again; I forget whether she was already drunk when she showed up or if she got hammered at Puck. Either way, she was being ejected because she was too intoxicated, and during an argument with the bouncers she tripped over her dog and got decently scraped up in the process.

For weeks after this happened, she called Puck endlessly trying to collect compensation for medical bills. Luckily, there had been numerous witnesses including most of our bouncers who could confirm that this woman's accident was her own fault.

One day, she called Puck's number, which is linked to a cell phone that was almost always in the possession of my boss. It was late morning or early afternoon, and we were setting up for the evening rush. My boss was fed up with this woman, and she tore her a new one over the phone, saying that if she called again she would take legal action against her. The calls stopped.
