We all can agree it's the tuning of the engine, not the hardware..

He is absolutely correct about the 3.5 having less low end torque. I own a 2010 4x4 Access Cab. A lady hit me at a traffic light so I had a rental for 15 days. It was a 2022 4x4 Double Cab SR5 TRD V6 with 5500 miles on it. While I loved all of the bells and whistles, it was noticeably slower. Proof is in the torque curve. The 4.0's max torque comes in at 4000 rpm while the 3.5's comes in at 4600 rpm making it a more peaking engine. But, the MPG was a little bit better and it was MUCH quieter. I was literally shocked! Also, the 2022 would downshift on the absolute slightest incline.

Did I like it? Yes. It has the lane change assist sensors on the side mirrors, lane assist on the dash where it would alert me with a beep, parking sensors, electric rear window, it would unlock automatically when I would pull the handle, it had a tailgate lock, etc. But, if I bought one, I would get the OV Tune or the Magnuson supercharger.

The stereo was decent but the rear speakers suck ass. The fronts were good. The touch screen is also decent and responsive. I hate the black and silver rims. I would get all silver or the TRD grays if I owned this truck.

Here is a You Tube video where they compared all 3 Tacoma generations. The 2nd gen handily beat the 3rd gen in a race even with wheel spin and the 3rd gen getting a slight head start. https://youtu.be/jbmOYTMirrw

Here we go again with what nimrod? I have had it with internet torchers trying to roast others over an open fire. Also, how can someone like you watch the review video on You Tube and deny the outcome? Amazing... this is why I don't jump on and post in places like this because there are too many idiots. Here are a few pictures of the truck that I drove.

For all that are reading this, go and test drive a low mileage 2015 and compare it to a new Tacoma. My 2010 will spin the tires easily where the 2022 will not do that at all and in fact lumbered until it hit about 3500 rpm. Once it hit 3500 rpm, it seemed to take off. There is a reason why the Forerunner has essentially the same engine that the old Tacomas had, albeit with dual vvti, the low end torque is better.

Pretty sure he’s saying “here we go again” because this thread is from 2017.

What low end torque? max torque at 4k rpm isn't "low end"

people are like "runs fine on 87 but why have no power". idk, try using 91 and give it 5-6 tanks to adjust. better yet, reset the learned values. my truck has plenty of torque and i have a 4 cylinder.

I am very aware of torque curves. I had a 1995 Tacoma that I bought in 1997. It was an SX regular cab automatic and it was a dog. It also had a torque curve at 4000 RPM but it did not feel like the 4.0 at all. I ended up with a Techtom ROM board upgrade from G Force Engineering (Tadashi Nagata) after I got ripped off from JET. (He closed his business and moved back to Japan many years ago) The older Tacomas were not EEPROMs.

4600 RPM is ridiculously high for a truck. Normally, trucks are engineered with flat torque curves. While I loved the 2022, the torque curve did not feel flat.

The 4.0 torque curve is identical, just slightly swallower, it is not flat, even alittle.

I think the new 4 cylinders are much better than the 2RZFE. The 2RZFE was much better when mated with a 5 speed manual. Back in the day, the autos lost 8 more horsepower to the wheels (120 vs 128) vs the manuals and the additional gear really helped a lot.

I don't know about the 3.5 liters, but the 4.0 ECU's have 3 maps. They have a low octane map, a base map and a high octane map. So, yes, running 91+ definitely helps. I noticed that my truck does not downshift near as much on long inclines when I use 91 octane. It will simply unlock the torque converter which I strongly prefer over the noise of a downshift. Edit: I am referring to the timing maps.

Absolutely no issues with torque here, even on stock tune. Always been using 91+ E0, now on 94.

For a NA engine, 4k is pretty low for peak torque. And peak torque is only part of the story, how flat the curve is, is probably more important.

3.5 makes most of its torque at around 2200-2300 rpms. I remember seeing a dyno chart on here.

After driving the the 2022 for 15 days, the only negatives I could find were 1. Low end torque. 2. Acceleration 3. Rear stereo speakers. 4. Black and silver rims. 5. The transmission tended to downshift at the slightest incline and would sometimes gear hunt. The MPG was a little better than my 4.0, it was much quieter and I loved the fact that the tailgate had a lock. Also, I loved having an MPG gauge. I might end up with an Ultra Gauge for my 2010, not sure yet.

I don't tend to drive aggressively which is why I like the 2022. But, it is definitely slower than my 2010.
