In seriousness though, what is the purpose of said bourbon? Gift?

Haha. Yes, my father-in-law is visiting and he likes bourbon. Nothing spicy I'd say. Nothing crazy high proof either. He normally drinks Woodford or Angels Envy, but I thought I'd surprise him with something nicer.

An FYI, the nicer stuff usually comes higher proof, allowing the end drinker to proof it to their personal taste by adding ice or water.

If he tends toward sweeter whiskey, look at:

    Russell's Reserve 10 year
    Larceny
    4 Roses Single Barrel
Knob Creek 9 year 100 proof

Those are all on par/a notch up from regular Woodford and Angel's Envy.

But really it all comes down to taste. You may just want to get what you know he likes.

Buffalo Trace bourbons have a pretty big fanbase.

Buffalo Trace, Weller Special Reserve, Eagle Rare and Blanton’s can usually be found for <$100. Out of those, Weller is probably the smoothest sipping in my opinion. I also really like Widow Jane and it’s usually an $80 bottle.

Concur with the Russel’s 10 year recommendation. One that would be nice as a gift is a Smoke Wagon small batch if you can find it, bottle is very attractive. Bowman’s port finished version is an option too (since that’s how Angel’s Envy is finished) but it’s less expensive than Angel’s Envy.

I just realized there are like seven bottles I’d recommend except that they’re over 110 proof…guess I like high proof more than I thought. Still, consider Old Forester 1920, which is smooth and delicious and not very hot at all.

    Uh....sort of.

And MSRP on all those are under 60. Please don't pay $45 for Buffalo Trace.

You are in the DFW so you can go with a Texas bourbon, Milam & Greene or Garrisons Brothers are pretty solid.

I'm 6 deep at the moment - we had a wave of it here this summer - so not worried for quite a while. But if there were single barrel picks around I'd be tempted to peek at 'em.

Single barrel BT picks would be so fun. Single Barrel BT at a higher proof as a retail product would be even funner.

I'm also a loser in the OF lottery. Story of my life! There's a Mexican restaurant I frequent that the owner is super into high end bourbon. I mention the OF Birthday lottery to the bartender. He mentioned the owner gets one every year from the liquor store they buy booze from. Pays to be the boss I guess! But he owns several restaurants and buys lots and lots of liquor from this store.

Let’s talk about the worst bourbons we’ve ever tried. On my list to pour out in the ditch are:
    -Wyoming Whiskey
    -Woodford Wheat
-Widow Jane Rye Oak and Apple Wood Aged

Honorable mention: Woodford Double Oaked. Liked the first pour, hated the second.

Sooo... there are a few "Introduce Yourself" threads here. But I think this is the best place to introduce yourself. I'm Tom, and I'm waiting for my truck. So, while I wait, let's talk about whisky.

During COVID, my wife and I completed a DIY renovation to a corner of our basement.

For years, a few high school friends and I have been getting together for "Whisky Nights". Our goal, for a long time, was to never drink the same whisky twice. This is the result of that hard work.

And, to answer the question, picking a favorite is REALLY hard. But my favorite at the moment is my special pick for my 50th birthday.

And, now I'm off to the "How long did you wait?" thread to ask Ron03 if there's any progress on my truck.
