This might be one of the dumbest posts ever, but I'm willing to ask anyway. I have a 1st Gen Tacoma, 2002, 3.4 engine, and the A/C system has been below par since the day I bought it new. My friend has a 2014 Tundra with a A/C system that could freeze a side of beef no problem.
Has anyone ever tried to swap the Tundra system into a Tacoma?
PS: I am aware that there would be some mods needed.

Have you taken any steps to diagnose your existing ac system? I don't know about freezing beef, but my ac doesn't have an issue of cooling down the cabin in these nearly 100 degree temps here in east county SD..

Yes I have. But maybe I'm just being picky. It's 100 F degrees today and my A/C is wide open blowing around 60 F degrees max. I guess I'm just amazed how cold my friends Tundra is.

Did you take your truck to an A/C shop for diagnosis?

I run a fun off a switch in mine for traffic when I drive it but mainly for when I am wheeling and not hetting much airflow.

Also your Orifice tube might be clogged

My AC system can keep ice cream frozen. You might want to get yours checked.

I’m at 45 degrees, the AC condenser shuts off at that temperature for me, the big difference is the 1st gen Tacoma don’t have as big a condenser, a smaller grill area.

you probably have a problem somewhere if you’re at 60,
But there are multiple ares to check

My evaporator core had to be replaced in September 2018, but the A/C has worked pretty damn good since the !

Could be a bad fan clutch or need to clean the condenser and evaporator. Simple as that.

    4 run, 2 don't
AC in both my Tacoma (1st Gen) and 4Runner (3rd Gen) were cold as hell; could keep ice cream cold as someone else mentioned.

One factor that wasn't mentioned here at all was a cab's insulation; newer vehicles are much better insulated than older vehicles.

Try this, crank up your truck and set the A/C to max cold and the fresh air door to recirculate. Let the truck idle that way for 5 minutes. Check your vent temperature and then put your hand on the low side hose coming out of the evaporator (big hose). If the low side hose is colder than the vent temp. Let me know.

Thanks Guys for the info. I think I'll take it to another A/C shop for a recheck. If I could get it to 45 like (1997tacomav6) has I'd be happy.

They should easily get to 45. I’m wondering if you have a blend door issue.

To answer one of the OP's questions - My '96 base-model Tacoma did not come with AC. So I installed a whole new system, using new and used parts. Nearly all the AC parts are vehicle and engine specific. On my Tacoma, one AC hose will interchange with a '90s 4-Runner, and the little AC push-button switch will interchange with several '90s Toyotas. Most everything else has to be for a 1995 to 2000 4-cylinder Tacoma. At one point around 1997, the high & low AC hoses design was changed. So you need both hoses from the same year, not one hose pre-97 and one post-97. Otherwise, butchering a '90s Tacoma or a part from a different Toyota to make something fit is simply not worth the trouble! By the way, my Tacoma AC output is below 50F, and a bit slow to cool on extremely hot days if parked in direct sun. But after several minutes, it's fine.
