I’m thinking it’s a single. I’ve seen them from $300 up to $2,000 online, not many up for sell around here at the moment.

We had a 17hp Kawasaki single on a JD mower that had 685 hours on it when we sold it. That was a solid engine power wise. The choke was never adjusted correctly until the last 2 years of ownership, once adjusted it made starting a lot easier in cold weather. The choke was only ever half from the factory adjustment.

 

I’ve already told him to price it to sell if I’m listing it!

 

Hey everyone- any tips on trouble shooting my 'no-spark' situation? I will read the schematic and see if I have battery power at the places where 12V should be present, this rig doesn't have any interlock switches, you could start it in gear with the blades engaged if you wanted to, so I can rule put those kinds of failures. It ran absolutely perfectly the last time that I used it ( aboot 2weeks ago).

 

What’s the mower and schematic? Can you show us? Could be a coil, wire, or even a bad spark plug. It could be something silly too…


Edit* I was just working on a mower that the starter relay was not functioning properly. I bypassed the relay with jumper cables and then the relay started working about 5 tries later.

Needless to say it could be a bad ignition switch that’s allowing it to turn but still killing the spark. Have a test light?

 

Do you have a multi meter?

Switch it to ohms.

Touch one probe to block and other to the coil kill wire.

Move switch from run to off.

Meter should show no continuity when in run position

Continuity when in off position.

To kill any motor, you are grounding the coil wire.

 

I’m just outside of Vegas and with the water usage limitations not many have grass so no lawn equipment for sale. I drove to Utah to get my riding mower

 

Head scratcher:

25 HP Kohler command horizontal twin.

Oil consumption/smokey exhaust.

New head gaskets.

Seems low on power

Oily plugs.

Compression is 120/122

Starts and runs very well .

Thought it was a bad head gasket, no sign of failed head gaskets. Replaced both and test ran for 45 minutes. Still has smoky exhaust. Most noticable when ramping down from full throttle to idle.

Why is this using/passing oil?

Pics so peeps will stop and read.

 

Did you pull the pistons? What do the rings look like? Is it running rich?

I had a wheel horse that was running really rich and produced almost 1/3 the power I expected.

 

Perhaps something in the crankcase ventilation system?
It should show minimum 4" of vacuum on the dipstick or oil fill cap.
Sludge on the oil control rings from poor maintenance?

 

I did not.

The cylinders showed no wear.

I've worked on other Command engines that showed more wear and they operated just fine after new gaskets.

 

Hmmm?

Will persue this. I'll have to MaGyver up a vacuum gauge to check this.

This pleases me, since I don't need to pull the engine to remove the shrouds to check on this.

I have a lead on a 3rd vehicle if all goes well it would replace the truck with no ac and be a driveway queen for at least 8-12 years.

We will see if it’s the real deal or Craigslist junk. I’ve had good luck buying not selling lately.

 

One down! Really liking the Samson rope! Definitely had a little bit of a learning curve getting it high up in the tree with a throw rope. Also nothing like trusting knots you just learned how to tie on google.

 

What knot did you learn? I want to work on mine.

 

Running bowline to go around the tree and alpine butterfly to hook my winch line onto.

 

I love the bowline but can’t tie it consistently.

 

When I was in college the professor joked and called it ‘strolling bowline’ and then marked it wrong when I wrote it on the test. I didn’t know he was joking when he said it.
