So much fan convo. Found this interesting and I did not know. Looks to be my issue as there’s strange fluid on the shaft.

Im once again out of town. I called the local dealership and he said they’d have to order it. Parts houses don’t have anything. No RC shops around either as that’s the general consensus to use some 6-10k RC diff fluid. So I dug into it and found that some plumber’s silicone faucet grease is very very close. So I’m going to grab a small tube of that and leave what existing sheared fluid in and add the plumber’s grease to it. Should have a decent viscosity to get me home. I don’t foresee it ‘burning up’ as its silicone based. Watched some videos and read some DIYs and the 10k fluids are extremely thick. I do have some RC diff fluid at home to swap it out with later.

    What I’m going to use.

Had no idea you can rebuild a fan clutch.

Some people have changed out the fluid to a different viscosity to change when the clutch engages.

    Me, too.

I didn’t either. Glad I looked into it. Worst case scenario I get a junkyard one with less miles.

This^ There some fairly in depth write ups and discussions on IH8MUD. Mostly TLC guys with 60s and 80s but even the pre Taco mini trucks are involved. The fluid shears and looses viscosity as it ages and miles are racked up. Thusly looses fan power. Apparently the preTacos came without fluid and was a dealer thing per climate area. It can be ordered still through Toyota in 3000, 6000, and 10000 viscosities. But most use Losi RC diff silicone because it’s readily available at any RC shop, is cheaper, and claimed to be better.

Yeah, I remember reading about some of that stuff a while ago. If I remember correctly, you can also change when it engages I think by removing small amounts of fluid as well.

There was some guys doing that but it seems like a complete PITA to me having to remove and open the clutch to remove or add fluid. Even if it’s overfilled and basically locked up, what’s the harm honestly?

You could maybe drill and tap a fill plug to make it easier. But depends on how motivated you are for the whole thing anyways

It’d throw it out of balance unless the plug was just right.

@loginfailed had a pretty lengthy discussion and about it in another thread. I think the CSF Radiator thread. Where if I remember correctly he used at least one shock oil to check performance.

Its not hard to change the fluid. I think its some 10mm bolts to take the clutch apart. You have to make sure the quantity added is equal to the quantity removed. You can go thicker or thinner, depending on what you're wanting. I moved to electric fan because you can just turn dials to make things behave how you want vs messing with fluids, taking the fan clutch on and off etc.

This is the stuff I used:

So Hawg, what is the status of your TT Tacoma? last I knew Matt had it for testing/development.

Long story short, got it back running much worse than when I sent it. Couldn't get it to run good, couldn’t stand to walk out and see that truck in my driveway any more, and couldn’t sell it in that condition, so I deinstalled and sold the truck to the dealer. Moved on.

I still check into TW though to watch JamesT work his magic.

@Turd Hawg , Sorry to hear that, was such an exciting year when things were moving forward, only to end in disaster.

I never had my TT delivered, but am extremely happy with the Maggy and YW tune. Nothing wild, but it now drives like a work truck should, which is such a tremendous improvement over stock, that it is a pleasure to drive now, and hard to complain about it not being Wild. (I had reserved the Power Max TT)

Looks like you no longer have a 3rd gen Tacoma, but if you do, let me know; i have info you may possibly find useful.
