Truthfully anyone can help with the ren fair question, but I was more curious to see if anyone on here goes to those?

My nieces and nephew are going along with my sisters and brother and spouses. They are dressing up. So I'm looking for some costume ideas for this year. I have 3 weeks, a limited budget and nothing in my closet that looks remotely renaissance except scarves.

I have not, but I know it delves into the Silmarillion. Not for sure how close they will follow Tolkien's material though. I haven't been that enthused with modern takes on LotR since that awful shit storm that was The Hobbit part 3.

I do wish I had Amazon Prime so I could watch it. That and The Grand Tour.

I'd be astonished if it's anything other than a steaming pile of crap, for more reasons that I care to go into...

Star Trek, Star Wars (and others) have all been subverted taken in directions that appalled many (most?) dedicated fans.
They're dead now to that segment of the audience.

But the Tolkien fandom is one that you don't wanna mess with.
The statements of the writers, the actors, and above all, the trailers have drawn ferocious reactions.

Ever come across the term "ratioed"?
That's when the ratio of likes to dislikes is... hmm... embarrassing.
Not so coincidentally, YouTube removed the counter from "Dislike" about the time of the first teasers being put up on YouTube.
Some of those drew something like 50,000 likes to half a million dislikes.
I may be wrong about the numbers, but ten to one negative is in the ballpark.
Not to mention tens of thousands of negative comments that magically disappear within days... as fast as they get moderated, it seems.
But the comments keep coming.

BTW, do a search on "restore YouTube dislike counter" to download a little browser extension that lets you see for yourself.
They still count dislikes, but only YouTube (for the algorithm) and the content creators are supposed to see them.
Good luck with that.

Here's the difference:
With Tolkien there's an established body of work.
When you falsify and twist it to serve your own agenda, you're gonna stir up a hornet's nest.

I would look at Instagram and Pinterest for ideas. I've also seen people dress as Star Trek away teams like they are visiting a new planet or time traveling.

 

They've had a few Renaissance Fairs at Renfrew Park on the east side of town.
We enjoyed going very much.

Tolkien fans are much more... dedicated to keeping the visual medium of Tolkien in line with his written word. And we won't watch something if it's not correct.
