How do I get this done?!?!!?

I have no idea how to get this washer back in this slot. I have snap ring pliers it wont budge this thing wide enough. Any tips ideas? The bearing end will not move easy at all. So I am at wits end with it

You need to slide it over the shaft and open it up with a snap ring pliers once you get to the splines, you can't push it into the groove like an E-Clip.

 

I cant even get it on the shaft. Opening it up with the pliers to the widest point and still nothing. I see how easy the bearing head pops off on videos I had to hammer mine off an back on. Something will work eventually but I have been at it 4 hours plus and trying to take a break an figure it out

 

I just ordered the pliers listed above so suppose ill get it done Monday

 

When I say slide it over the shaft I mean it has to go on from the end of the shaft.
Yea those kind of snap rings can be a royal pain to mess with even with the proper pliers, with the wrong pliers they can be damn near impossible to get.
I'm asuming that's a CV shaft end? They shouldn't be terribly tight on the splines unless something is buggered up.

 

I always installed the snap ring on the bench it was easier for me.

Looks like you are reassembling a CV axle. You need to slide that retaining ring onto the shaft (further down than the groove) before you put the roller head back on, like this:



Then you slide the roller head on (which should not require hammering - if it does, your CV will not work correctly when it is installed and you need to get a new one) and install the retaining clip, like this:
(Note: you can't slide the roller heads far enough down the shaft to install the thinner retaining clip if you don't have the thicker retaining ring below its groove when you put the roller head on.)



Once this is done, you can slide the roller heads up and over the thinner clip, and then use pliers to secure the lower snap ring into its designated slot.

Then I probably have a bad axle if the roller head is supposed to move that free!! Dang that is bad news and hate to hear I may have lost my original CV axel. Uggghhhhh

 

The three little bearings are soooooo smooth I suppose my end got to much hear or something an it must have swollen or something. I guess its time to start trying to find junkyards or part outs etc or the dreaded after market. What a day!

 

You need snap ring pliers that open the ring up. It’s very easy if you have some. Took me like 3 min to get it on

The lower lock ring is a bitch. I killed two sets of lock ring pliers the first time I did this job. Had to modify an old set of welding pliers to get the sucker off. Plus you only want to expand it just enough to get it over the splines or you will deform it. I got pissed and went full tard, had to find a new one.

 

Well that doesnt seem to be the issues if what I am hearing is correct an the roller head should move freely on the splines mine def dont. So something must be wrong with my end.

 

I dont understand that the roller head end doesnt seem to be designed to have free movement up an down the splines its for the most part locked in place. Its just odd because its been this way for as long as it has and I have had no issues with it. All the rollers work great they are smooth as silk my end is showing heat just like every other one I have seen so I am not so sure I am not gonna get these pliers an put it back on. If it messes up afterwards then hey its a pretty easy off easy on but I honestly dont think there will be issues. And yeah all my testing on getting it on have been done with the old ring not the new one so its still as tight as a vir...ummmmm drum

 

They are quite sturdy to say the least and my hands this morning feel like I have been in the worlds strongest man grip an hold competition lol and come to find out I chipped the dang tip on my thumb haha.

 

Man that was a pain in the arse but got it done finally. kinda did it totally different but same result hopefully

 

Looks like all 4x4 ers should have the reverse plyers....

Wild idea, what if you took some valve lapping compound and put it on the spines, then worked the head on and off till it was nice and polished (ya ya I know) and moved smoothly?
