Campsite: Hastings Campground - Maine White Mountain National Forest

Good Story/Side Note: This area received at least (conservatively) approx 5" of rain on the evening of 8/23 starting at dusk until around 2:00 AM on the 24th. The nearby Wild River (about 0.1 mi away) and the usually friendly Evan's Brook flowing through the campground about 200' from my campsite were easily crossed rock-hopping while I fly-fished and explored their banks. By 11:30 PM they were both loud, angry-sounding streams making a lot of noise that kept going up. My tent was in a good spot, but when I checked outside the tent from time to time the table in the pics was surrounded by water and the site was flooded about half-way over to the truck and just short of the fireplace. Things let up after about 2:00 AM with just dripping trees on the tent and the now quite loud streams. I got out of the tent at dawn to take a look around. The brook was no longer a rock hop. Wild River was a roiling angry mess and living up to it's name. To make a long story short, I checked out the river gauge online that USGS maintains in this area approx 6 miles downstream from where I was camping. The peak numbers were amazing: In early afternoon on the 23rd before the rains came, the river level was at a reasonable 2.0'. Between 11:15 pm (8/23) and 1:15 AM (8/24) the Wild River rose from 2.31' to 5.08' at which time it began to recede. Streamflow rates were reasonable during the afternoon: no danger wading in mid-afternoon: 17/ft sec late afternoon, up to 36.8 at 9:05 pm then an astonishing rate of: 1,710/ft sec @1:00 AM (8/23).

No wonder the night woods were so loud.

Thanks to both of you. Really does put a smile on my face when I hear that folks like stuff I post. Most of the time I'm just humbled by what I see from others. I always feel that there's so much I have yet to learn.

Read from the poster's description: "07 DCSB trd sr5 (deceased)" I drove the 25 year old '71 International Scout II home from western Montana to Cordova, Alaska, where it served me well for a number of years until it was replaced by another vehicle and I swapped it for aircraft parts. It still sits next to a hangar, where it had been destined to serve as the next seaplane lift truck. I retired ten years before the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the IH Scout II 1971-2021. When it rains here, it doesn't rain nearly as much, or as often. <G>
I was a volunteer director (14 years) with Terminal Radio, Inc. of Valdez, Alaska's KCHU public radio, "The Sneeze from Valdez." I always enjoyed the drive on the Glenn Highway, looking at Mount Drum directly ahead or behind ("You can see for miles and miles and miles and..." -great song), in a great variety of road conditions. That was a great landmark for the surveyors!

Made the long drive to visit my eldest's family, including my first grandson last weekend. WA ferry to Bainbridge Island, and return via the Tacoma Narrows Bridge20220826_112838[2].jpg 20220826_113021[1].jpg 20220826_120100[1].jpg IMG_5958(1)[1].jpg.
I took some DSLR photographs of the Sol Duc River, as we enjoyed seeing a little of the legendary rivers of the Olympic Peninsula. Compared to Alaska Marine Highway System ferries, which also transport semi trailers, the WA Ferries carry motor vehicles, loaded and offloaded in 15 minutes, with a 35 minute voyage Seattle to Bainbridge Island. Now to train the cat to travel and camp with the Tacoma... Nice to get back into the temperate rainforest...
