I just popped the hood and noticed my factory battery says 24F on it. I was under the impression that trucks with tow hitches were equipped with 27F?

Yeah, I’m a bit confused. My truck definitely has the tow package…factory hitch, trans cooler, 4 & 7 pin connectors etc.

Any advantage of going to a 27F AGM battery? What would be required to step up? A new tray? What else?

I think second gen TRD's came with 27f; 3rd gens now only come with 24f

More reserve capacity, but the trade off is more weight on the front of the truck and less CCA. You'll need a bigger tray/mount, a tune or battery tender as the 3rd gens alternator doesn't put out enough current to fully charge an AGM, and an aftermarket strap regardless of 24f or 27f.

Again, I went with Walmart's Everstart 24F AGM. It's got plenty of juice of aftermarket stereo's, lights, and other accessories and a 4 year free replacement warranty for about $150ish. Also, recommend the Noco Genius 10 for charging. You won't find another AGM at that price point.

My factory battery is 5 years old and still seems fine, but with PA winter approaching, I’m considering a new one.

I’m leaning towards either the EverStart Maxx or NAPA Legend Premium. I’ve heard good things about both.

The EverStart Maxx is about $70 cheaper and has 750 CCA’s, which is 25 more than the NAPA Legend Premium.

However, I like the flat top maintenance-free design of the NAPA and the fact that it’s manufactured by East Penn.

Anyone have any input to offer on these two?

I prefer East Penn Mfg over Johnson Controls, but price. Find the one with the best warranty and the store that will have a replacement in stock should you need it. Either one should be fine.

That was only on 2nd Gen, all 3rd Gen's have 24F

Thank you, both, for clarifying that for me.

They both appear to have 3 year free replacement warranty. I have both a NAPA and Wal-Mart within 10mins from me, so replacement & availability should never be a major concern.

I guess it boils down to am I willing to pay $70 more for an East Penn flat-top battery with 25 less CCA’s???

Personally, I'd put the $70 in the gas tank or towards groceries or mods. 25 less CCA isn't going to be noticeable though.

If you do any off roading, hellraising, or steep hills/traverses you need a sealed battery, unless you enjoy dealing with the acid spillage and ensuing body/frame corrosion.

Not sure if this is the place to ask this but….. I left a light on and drained my battery all the way to 0 and jumped it but now after a few days it’s dead again. Is my battery shot? It’s a year old?

Did you bring it back up to full charge by driving it? If yes, then you may have buckled one of the plates. Get it tested at any auto parts store to be sure

Almost every battery I have purchased for the last 25 years both personally and for work were built by East Penn. I put more faith in the manufacturer than the close CCA rating.

Idling or even driving isn't really sufficient for such a deep discharge.

You can try charging it with a decent charger, a lower rate charger (2-5 amps) will take much longer but is better for the battery as it will build less heat when charging.
Once you charge it fully most auto parts stores can load test it for you.

Modern batteries seem to be less tough compared to the batteries of 25 years ago.
Back then you could leave the lights and drain them flat and everything was fine with a charge -- today it seems more of a 50/50 thing.
