I have been seriously considering changing the oil in my differential s but a couple of people I talked to about it said they had NEVER changed it out and once you do, you start having problems with transmission. Now I am conflicted, if they have never done it, how would they "know" it causes problems? I just paid my Taco off and want it to last forever and thought if I performed all recommended maintenance I would be doing her right. Does it NEED to be changed?

Are you sure those people weren't talking about the transmission fluid? I've heard of people saying to leave that alone, but I don't think that's necessarily the right thing to do.

The differential oil shouldn't affect the transmission. I would change it at whatever interval the manual recommends.

ive never heard of anyone having an issue after changing the diff fluid. its pretty hard to screw up

the trans is "sealed" (aka no dipstick) but you can still change it. that process is a little more difficult but still pretty easy if you can follow directions. I'd definitely recommend doing it once you get up there in miles.

Supposed to be done every 30-40k. Easy front and rear access and takes less than an hour to do. Lots of post on TW for how to. Do this! Trans... consider the options. Toyota says every or so 60k it should be done. Again LOTS of information. Harder to do, but there are several ways. Takes about 45 minutes.
