Ok so I started taking out my needle bearing, and of course the tool snapped in half... so I need to get replacement tool to remove the bearing, but not sure what will work.

Does anyone know if the rental tools from the parts store will work?

A hack saw blade will work as well, you can cut the old bearing race and pull it out. Obviously requires care with the shavings, but its a 100% emergency repair,

Well looks like hack saw is going to be my solution.... I hit every single parts store, harbor freight and norther tool. The best thing I found was a pilot bearing puller, but no one has a slide hammer to fit it.

So stuff paper or plastic in deep, and use grease on the blade to collect the shavings. Then with the drain plug out brake clean the ever living fuck out of the whole.

You aren't the first or the last, dont worry.

Well I got it! fucking thing.... I used the pilot bearing puller put onto a giant old slide hammer my neighbor had. I had to take everything apart to fit it in there though...

Now I just need to finish putting in the new one, put in the new axle seal that I destroyed and put the suspension back on.

If you need a replacement axle seal, the OEM P/N interchanges with National P/N 710596. Might have better availability in your local parts stores.

Was it the ECGS tool that broke? What piece broke?

Yeah, the part that goes behind the bearing snapped in half. Not sure how though, it was straight in there and pulling on the bearing. Got about 4 turns before it snapped.

Wonder if the insert plate caught on the lip of the diff housing, as cautioned in the ECGS instructions:

    upload_2022-9-5_15-58-55.jpg

My bearing came out easy-peasey. The bushing took a lot of hammering to go in though. At the time I didn't think about putting it in the freezer.

I bet that's what happened! The diff started turning right as it broke.

Anyone know if there is a reliable shop in MD or Virginia that does the needle bearing swap? After reading this I am even less inclined to do it myself.

    Thanks!

I think this was 100% my fault, but having a backup tool located and ready would be a good idea if you are doing it yourself. Once I started the job, the bearing was destroyed and I couldnt put it back together and just wait for a new tool to show up.
