Building a 2GR-FKS for max power and reliability

Well boys it finally happened, Nuked the engine in my 16’ Taco with a touch over 161000 miles on her.
So now I’m looking at building up a replacement engine from a brand new short block. I am looking for input on how to make the most of this platform and what options there are for making a more reliable 2GR-FKS
while also squeezing everything I can out of it power wise.
Any help greatly appreciated & thanks in advance for your time

Do you have a part number for the short block

 

As to what failed….. I will know more when the old engine gets taken out and torn apart.
Right now it’s mere speculation. The Techs at the dealership said and I quote “absolutely needs replaced”

I do not have the part number on hand for the short block, but it will be coming directly from Toyota

Not much for upgrades.

One thing that I'm slowly changing my mind on is catch cans. I used to be against it. But it would really limit carbon build up and help for long term.

 

Stock + a tune, unless blowing up a second one is your goal?

not much has been done on the FKS. but the FE that was in all the FWD cars get huge benefits from intake and exhaust work with proper tunes..

but the fact that lotus uses the engine and the mr2 community took a liking to the fe is why its gotten love.. the FKS is pretty much forgotten



as for reliability, oiling issues on steep inclines is an issue that can be remedied.. but it would involve drilling and welding and some other janky shit to help oil drainage at extreme angles....

or dry sump

 

I'm very close to pulling my engine and upgrading some parts... the usual stuff, valves, pistons, rods, and more. Time to begin discussing the various options...

 

I have some ideas to deal with oil removal from the cylinder heads... I suspect we can accomplish it without going very janky.

 

just my driving around town in a span of 5k miles made me realize that it was a good investment.

Not to start a typical TW shitposting battle, but are you seeing significant intake valve carbon buildup on the 2GR-FKS?

I was somewhat reassured by the dual injection system on our engines...

 

There's no aftermarket for your minivan engine. Sorry.

 

The fe suffers a similar issue in very hard cornering. Alex Wilhelm has done stuff to mitigate it. Including running external lines to allow drain back from the corner that pools oil

 

Other than someone neglecting to empty it, or installing it poorly to begin with, what is the downside in your opinion? My truck is a 2001 but I installed my catch can years ago and my engine runs nicely. Can never gets above 1/4-1/3 full.

 

Not to downplay the credibility of your dealer techs, but what diagnostics did they do to come to this conclusion? Also, what were your symptoms that led you in to them?

 

The engineers are not wrong. But the cost will be their goal balanced with reliability. You can spend money making it more reliable, but performance will cost money and usually some reliability.
