Requesting or having someone provide you a competitive tune you did not purchase is likely not in line with good business practice. If someone wants to try any alternate tune then what they have so be it, but you should get their current file in hand. I assume it's of course to assist them to revert, but it's not your file to support and many owners do not have it to even give. Too many bad seeds out there to really support this idea. I admit, my concerns are based on some folks that made some poor choices in the past and I don't see them recovering. I have no doubt you personally are 100% straight up....I'd rather a past customer come to me and say "hey look, I had KDMAX Pro XT and it was awesome, then I tried OtherTuneHere but it was crappy. Can you set me back up?" I would - and if they came to me I wouldn't even charge them for it. We all make mistakes after all ;)

I'm honestly not understanding where you're going with this, and I apologize. Are you suggesting that asking for their current tune so I can potentially restore them if need be is not a good business practice? Because I've had it set up before without issue, directly from the developers/competition.

I think what you are saying is you want to provide the best service restore them which is great. What I am saying is the file they purchase is not something they should be really be sharing/distributing to anyone else. Like I said, not anything wring with YOUR intentions but that file(s) could be used by OTHERS in an improper way.

They arrive VIN locked. Don't sweat it, lol.

I've even had a few customers contact me asking to flash tunes I don't support because they're dead-set on those tunes but there's nobody else local. They talked to the developers and I was sent the VIN locked files in my email. So far it has been no big deal to me or the developers of the competing tune(s). There's nothing wrong with that and it's essentially the same thing.

Totally agree for VIN locked files and that's a great +1 service you are providing those users! And sorry, you still think I am talking about you, you're good sir!

Yes, I think any time something like this is arranged, the files should be VIN locked to prevent misuse. I will agree there.

For $350 you have to like it. No wants to be a dumb ass saying they don't after costing that much.

Blackhawk comes with a Regular, Octane Learning file, and a Premium performance file for a fraction of the price. Worth taking a look!!!

Anyone know anything about certain tunes limiting port injection mode and thus reducing the cleaning benefits of the port/direct injection combination in the d4s engine?

I’m getting better then advertised MPGs with a 2” lift, 33”s and about 600 pounds of extra weight. I do drive pretty conservative most of the time though. Running premium SFOB tune on 94 E0 octane, drives amazing!

Fraction of $350 for the Blackhawk tune? Where from? I recently researched several of the popular tunes and do not find this to be accurate. I was trying to decide between the OTT and Blackhawk and the Blackhawk was almost double!

So, how much better are we talkin?

All I know is, when I had 31.6" all terrains on my sport M/T and no air dam, I certainly didn't get better mileage than OEM (especially highway).

So city driving, I do 12.5-13. Highway I can do 10.5-11 if not going faster than 100. I do drive for fuel economy 90% of time. My truck is a bit heavy so I take it easy. I recently switched to 94 E0 chevron and it seemed to improve my fuel economy. Used to use shell 91 E0.

Few weekends ago I did a 800 km trip trough the mountain passes fully loaded up at max payload. Was maintaining 120-140 uphills and fighting strong headwinds, averaged 15.5-16. Not too bad.

My almost stock ranger on 31s did 17-18 in city… I’m very happy with my taco.

This was driving on highway no faster than 105 or so. My tires are 33” so it’s more like 10.7L per 100km

Someone on Reddit documenting engine sound with and without tune, saying when he flashed back to factory ECU, weird noises went away, the theory being port injection was not engaged as often with the tune. This is the kind of thing that scares the crap out of me.

    Interesting.

FWIW, my buddies stock 3.5L in his taco sounds identical to mine. Same trucks except for his is 2020.

After I flashed my ECU, engine seemed to start quicker. Also it runs/idles a bit smoother. A lot of dudes are tuned for many, many thousands of miles and not one failure yet due to a tune.

Interesting.. but just a theory if course.

I can't speak for the plethora of tuners out there with regards to whether they've changed how port/direct/either injection modes are utilized.. I CAN tell you that the original developer (Mat Wilson, OVTune) had thought about using direct injection mode more in his tunes, but this ultimately got shitcanned at the time due to some.... "concerned".. testers (mainly one guy IIRC) going very public with their dissatisfaction.
Mat tried to explain that port mode wasn't being eliminated, but to no avail.
Remember that a lot of these tunes (I'm not saying all) are actually based off of Mat's original files, especially when it comes to code changes.

Holy crap, I couldn't touch that highway mileage with 265/70/17 Wildpeaks and NO extra weight on the highway. Even correcting for the oversized tires, I would be in the 12-12.5 l/100 km range.
Now, since then I put my truck back to the stock setup (yep, chin strap back on- gasp) and can get in the low to mid 9's on the highway.
