Ahhhh a key ingredient in R-11 and R-12 refrigerant! No wonder both were outlawed

 

At the way back job some of the chillers ran R-11, interesting stuff.
Bring a pony drum inside in the winter, open it and have a liquid, as it warms up (about 75 degrees) it starts to boil in the drum.

 

Still had leaded gas so we’re good for just a bit. Used to buy tetraethyl lead in separate bottles even.

 

Yessir, machine operated in a vacuum. 800T R11 Carrier right there. (This one had a 4150 start winding) Dimmed lights for sure.

I had 4 Tranes that ran 4160, the 3 Carriers were 480 and a natural gas fired Caterpillar V12? (been a long time) unit called a TecoChill.

The TecoChill was a prototype 850 ton machine and the software (primitive back in the day) was never quite right, it ran great and made a butt ton of hot water too -- until the times when you absolutely needed it the most and then it would randomly shut down the moment you left the powerhouse.

 

I had to look up pony drum. Got some weird results before I got more specific. Are you talking about a barrel that holds about 15 US Gallons?

 

The refrigerant drums are shorter and heavier built than a standard 15 gallon drum and held 100 pounds IIRC.

 

Pair of Tranes. 900 & 600T, R123 conversions both of ‘em. When there Maxed out I think I can hear Wisconsin.
