Here is the tool that I was suggesting. But I would get a drum brake kit. It includes other specific tools that make the job much easier.

    https://www.amazon.com/Performance-Tool-W175-Spring-Pliers/dp/B00BR1BV8Q?keywords=Drum+Brake+Tool&qid=1662564757&sr=8-3-spons&th=1

    Full kit:

And a youtube video of how the tool works:

If you are not doing so already my drum brake trick is to crank the adjuster almost completely closed .( Works great for removing the drums as well.)

makes installing new springs much easier.

Making sure shoes are seated correct install the drum adjust up as needed.

My dad had 1 of these as well for measuring the inside of the drum and the outside of the brakes before reassembly. I need to get one, to go with the other brake tools. I've always hated adjusting them through that small slot.

That gauge tells you back in the old days to throw out the drums they are already to thin to cut again.

I guess adjusting the drum brakes is just one of those things Backing them off is a habit to remove drums i never thought adjusting them up was difficult or a pain.

Going back together it was always serviced adjusters or brandy new which makes it easier at least to me.

I tried that, got the spring on, then realized the adjuster had fallen out of the slot. :annoyed: I had to pull the dang spring back off and reset everything and pull like my life depended on it. My hands are bruised today... :bananadead:

It takes a little practice the adjusters slip out now and then it happens since everything is clean nothing wrong with a piece of tape holding things in place.

till you get your technique figured out The downside is most people might do drum brakes every few years.

That's exactly the unit I have - VERY handy for dialing in drum brakes.

I'm pretty sure those drums were factory. I'm just shy of 150k. The front shoes on both sides were getting thin, but the rear shoes still had life, and I but I could've turned the drum, but it was crusty and rusty so in the bin it went. all the springs on the driver side looked alright, but the passenger side was on the verge of rusting, dark colored and little paint left. All the other parts shined up with some brake cleaner. Threw on all new springs anyway since I had em. New drums and shoes and I greased up all the spots that rub metal on metal per instructions and put never seized on the adjuster screw. I wanted to do the fronts too, but I planned to do the drums first because I knew they'd take longer than I thought. and they did. I was out there for like 8 hours. :censored:
I had to make a drum puller out of a 2x4 and my gear puller kit. Didnt think it was gonna hold as my washer stack started to sink in, then, POW. The sucker came loose with some smoke. I got out my Ingersoll grinder and cleaned all the rust off the mating surfaces and threw on anti seize there too. Cleaned a ton of dust out of there too. Now that I think about it, I forgot to sweep out the garage...
First time working on drums. I never replaced the ones on the Pontiac Grand Am I used to drive.

Friend of mine ask me to make him a pin for this blade, have no idea what it’s supposed to look like and this is just a guess. If it don’t work we’ll punt.

Cole ask what are you doing with that stick? I said I’m using it as a tape measure to set the depth, marked it with my pen :D

Huh. I was thinking the hook tool I use for snowmobile exhaust springs was good for these, I had no idea these pliers existed. These look like they’d work way better!

Friendly PSA to check and double check.. and then triple check to make sure all wire harnesses and plugs are out of the way when reinstalling a transmission. I didn't and ended up smoking the passenger side O2 sensor plug yesterday. :anonymous::bananadead:
