And thank you for taking the time to explain the finer points of the Toyota world. TW has some weird quirks for sure.

GM has their "option" plan for employees and retirees. Ford does the same with their "A" plan. Big discounts. One of the conditions is you have to maintain ownership for a certain period of time after purchase. Sounds like Toyota is setting up "conditions" themselves due to this crazy market were seeing? Maybe they see it as a way to keep prices more stable in the long run. It does seem like that wasn't the intention of the OP. Knowing this, the dealership should be able to straighten this out with Toyota though.

You have every right to do what you want. Toyota has every right to decline doing business with you. They are not forcing you to buy their vehicle, nor do they care if you sell your vehicle... only if you do it wrong they will not sell another one to you.

I had to sign a contract that said I couldn’t sell it within 3 months of purchase.

Well apparently Toyota does care if you sell your vehicle. That is what this thread is about. They should focus on just selling vehicles at their asking prices. There’s no need to be nazis about who they allow the privilege to purchase their product or not. Let’s be honest here, it’s a Toyota, it’s not that special.

Do you even technically own your vehicle, especially if you finance through Toyota?

Yeah. Technically the bank owns the vehicle until your last payment is made and they send you the title. Maybe Toyota needs to black list the bank. :D

To add onto this, if your curious where these trucks ended up being exported to, I remember an internal memo that denoted-

    • Tundras most commonly turned up in South Africa.
    • Sequoias same as tundra.
    • 4Runner LIMITEDS in specific were being sent to Japan and China.
    • Tacomas we’re a pretty wide spread, with limiteds and nightshades ending up in large Asian cities.

Again, they do not care if you sell. However, if you do, you can't buy another one from them. Flip prevention.

I’m not sure why this is so difficult to understand. These laws are passed under the auspices of public safety, protecting citizens from fraud. In reality, it’s crony capitalism that protects the dealership from your competition.

What? The selling is exactly what they dislike. They wouldn’t care if you bought 30 Tacomas and parked them all in your barn and kept them. They would care if you sold them all though.

I know some dealers won’t sell out of their immediate area, but the franchise dealer model means Toyota will keep sending more special edition trucks to dealers who sell the most.

When I bought mine - I was asked where I lived because "Toyota will only allow us to sell within XXX miles - can't come up from another state and buy". Impression I got was Toyota was putting the limits on out of area sales, black listing (from this thread) etc

Given that just about every dealer is selling every car they can get their hands on - allocation to "those who sell the most" doesn't make sense because they can only sell what Toyota's sending them. No one's sitting on stock.

Seems like they're trying to keep the secondary market from getting out of hand. I even could see some PR damage control so flippers aren't sending Tacos to Russia to show up on the news as they fight. Or other areas.

But I'm the center of the universe. It cannot exist if it never happened to me!

There's a tiny used car lot by my house. They have been buying new Toyotas and turning abound and selling them for a few thousands more. Slick cause they sell. I could see him getting blacklisted...

They’re almost certainly buying from auctions or private parties, I’d bet dollars to donuts they’re not buying from Toyota or a Toyota dealer without a middle man, and once it goes through someone else, it gets titled to someone else and another owner negatively impacts value.

The geoblock thing may be regional; here in New England one can drive for an hour and end up two states away. In the case of the Toyota dealership my son works in (for less than a month) here in southern(ish) New Hampshire, he has already sold cars to folks from New York, Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and of course New Hampshire.

Yeah, not sure how they do it. But there's been lots of toyota trucks and suvs in the lot with paper plates, brand spanking new...
