Bedrail Clamps Update:
You may be aware that we’ve been developing a universal mounting system for our campers over the last year or so. While our current system has worked well for the majority of campers, we are taking this opportunity to roll out a new clamping setup for all new campers moving forward. If you’ve been using the legacy bedrail clamps without issue, then you can continue doing so. If you’d like to learn more about our full round-up of camper mounting options, please read on.

Ver 2: The Wildly Over-Engineered Clamps

Earlier in the year, our design team began working to develop a bedrail clamp system that would work with existing truck bed c-channel systems, as well as offering a clamping option for those models without channels. Our first round of design and prototyping lead to a clamp design that ended up overshooting the mark a bit. This new design ended up being over-engineered for a full production run, and unfortunately, they came in 4 times more expensive than planned! This clamp has now become known as the “Wildly Over-Engineered Clamps”.

Ver 3 Clamps: A Design In-Progress

Due to the over-engineering and cost of the first redesign, we’re now hard at work on a Version 3 clamp design, that will strike the balance of well considered design and a reasonable cost. Prototypes are expected to arrive next week. Once the design has been finalized for production, we will offer an update on timing and ordering info.

Your Mounting Options:

• Continue with your current setup – The majority of the campers / fitments are working great with their current clamp setup. If you aren’t experiencing any issues, please continue on you adventures!
  
  
  
  
• Bolting to the bedrails – By far the cleanest and strongest way to mount the X1 is bolting the camper down through the bed rails. This isn’t possible with all truck models, but it works great for those that it is. If you are interested in bolting your camper, please reach out to us for instructions & best practices.
  
  
  
  
• Ver 2 ‘Wildly Over-Engineered’ Clamps – These clamps are available to order now, although we have a very limited inventory. We are making these available for sale at cost, plus shipping & handling, to any existing customers that are in immediate need of a better mounting solution. If these are something you absolutely need for your X1 (and want a little piece of SP design history), simply follow the link below, add the Clamps to your cart, and checkout. *Orders will be filled based on available inventory and once they’re gone, they’re gone for good.
  
  
  
  
• Ver 3 Bedrail Clamps – Once this design has been finalized, we will reach out again to notify you. Anyone whose camper isn’t currently bolted, and has either a Chevy Colorado / GMC Canyon, Toyota Gen2, or Jeep Gladiator (without c-channel rails) will receive the clamps at no charge, plus shipping and handling, upon request. The V3 Bedrail Clamps will also be made available for sale (Price TBD) to all other customers that are interested. If you would like to order this option, you can simply wait to receive the completion email and order at that time.
  

 

I would also add they only sent this to the customers that were on the list that was going to be sent new mounts (Chevy Colorado / GMC Canyon, Toyota Gen2, or Jeep Gladiator). Some of my other buddies with X1s did not get the email.

 

Glad you were able to get it back into position. A new front bar would definitely help I think.. I havent had any movement even with the stock clamps.

 

Just getting back to this myself. Its the grip itself.. not the actual assembly.

 

My wife and I were able to get out for a quick trip this weekend to make up for our FUBAR'd planned trip to MOAB for 6 days due to getting hit by the Rona finally. We made it this whole time.. and 2 days before our planned trip with friends with get it. Spent the week off work and missing out on our time off. We made it out to our local favorite spot for a couple nights. Ended up being perfect and what we needed. Installed the new crossbar while we were out there.

 

That blows you missed the trip. Were you actually sick though? Meaning, have bad symptoms? I got covid right when i got home from my trip to pick the camper up. I had bad alergy symptoms for a couple days, felt shitty for two days, and that was it.

 

That blows. I did gear some trucks had issues, not all. Mine seems ok so far. 5k plus miles.

 

The first couple days hit us hard, 101+ temps, cold/night sweats, crazy body aches.. then it was about 4 days of just no energy, no appetite, kinda blah feeling. By the end of the week we were feeling pretty good and decided some fresh air would do us good. Definitely seemed to help.

 

Regarding the "Were you actually sick though" comment, I think that some of us are a little jaded bc we've had it a few times and forget how bad it was the first time we got it.

The first time I got The Rona, it was in March of '20 and they didn't even have tests back then. I kept swearing that I had something else bc what would the chances be that I was about the 10th case in the entire country... but I was sick as hell and felt like I was literally going to die. Mild fever, but super bad chest symptoms. There were times I would lay in bed literally panting like a dog bc I couldn't get enough O2.

Then, when they later came out and said that Rona was actually in the US starting around Nov/Dec '19, I talked to my Dr and I already had antibodies, so yeah, I definitely had it. Later, I got vaxed, then re-vaxed, and when I got it a 2nd time I barely felt it. Probably bc it was the 4th time my body had "seen" the virus in some form and my system went into high-gear right from the start. Point here being, yeah... it sucks. Sorry to hear you were so sick, but great camp spot you have there!!

 

Got ya. I actually thought it would be worse TBH. We've had friends and family that have gotten it, some more than once.. and we always seemed to avoid it. Now it seems symptoms and strains have changed since most of the people we know who did get it had it.. So those more severe symptoms didnt get us.. was really just a bad Flu imo. We never got shots or anything either..

 

WOOF! $400 for the clamps?! It's BS that after 2 years you're still waiting for quality clamps and forced to buy these at full price.
I seem to be an outsider on this one but as I have said before my experience with SP's customer service was complete trash after I got my camper. I would be pretty ticked off at this point.

 

What happened with your customer service experience?

 

I'm not happy about it, but also have no intention of selling either. Customer services were so-so, but the lack of good mounts and the "unified" design was BS for tacomas. It still is made for a 3rd gen. Based on my entry point I gave it a go instead of waiting.

 

Camper is designed for a 3rd gen which has differences in the bed. “Universal clamps were shown many times on 2nd gens to have bottomed out bolts that wouldn’t tighten any further and owners like @nudavinci64 informed all of us that the camper shifts. It sounds like @XPOTRPR machined a front bar that seems to keep the camper in place with the original clamps…

I haven’t been in the thread for a while. What are the issues still going on like tent leaking at corners, extrusion alignment issues, etc?

I always know people looking for a wedge so I figured I’d catch up on the SP status.

I guess might as well update on camper:
First I'm still super happy with it. I was impressed with the venting last November when I was in Utah desert. They worked amazing in freezing conditions. Barely had any condensation. Overall camper is holding up great.

Biggest gripe has been the clamps. I have had good luck with the customer service but am annoyed Rob and I were strung along for over a year to get what should be an easy solution. Especially the spacer on the cab side for the lip.

When it was installed I got 4 bolts through the bed rails.
They loosened quite often and I just kept tightening. I had a seal issue because the cab side bed lip is smaller than the other gens. SP was headed south and lifted my camper, replaced the seal and gave me different style clamps I was worried about. I drove a mile in the desert and the clamps were loose. The clamps wrecked my bed rails as they pull away when tightened. They realized they should have stuck to the bolt through method.
I had to buy 90 deg drill and drilled new holes in SP camper since it was slightly different location after we re-sealed it. I added two pieces of wood at the cab interface to take away movement in the fore aft direction.
I'm now planning on adding steel angle along the rail to stiffen and to reduce load at the washers (shown in the 2 crappy pics).

 

Are you guys having 2nd gen clamp issues using the stock bed caps? They could be part of the problem since mine were already partially crushed by my old fiberglass truck topper. I replaced the stock caps with voodoo offroad caps and haven't had any clamps loosen. I've driven plenty of rough 4x4 roads but am not a "off roader" just getting to trailheads and camping.

 

I’m looking for utility trailer haha. Realized it’s way better than truck bed and I can do whatever i please with my truck.

 

I'm on stock bedrails.. I dont think its that either. I think its lack of *solid* surface area for the camper to sit on. These fillers mixed with not being attached to the truck itself I think is allowing movement, and over time creating larger gaps/room to allow the X1 to shift around, loosening up/stretching out the clamps even more due to that shifting. Since last November, mine has shifted maybe an 1/8" overall, notable by the back and forth rub marks on the X1 at the clamp locations. That was after initial install and wheeling and the seals finally settling. I re-tightened the clamps months ago and it hasnt moved since.

 

I thought the official SP response was that they "do not recommend or support" aftermarket bed caps like the Voodoo (or better Relentless ones I have). They "supported" a few early customers by adding filler starboard in there, which like XPOTRPR states that shifts around and causes more issues.
