    @Plain Jane Taco

    There is a gun shop and shooting range like a mile from my work that has some of the coolest patches!

    My Tacoma has never overheated in nearly 157K miles, but it also never seen extreme desert heat. Any well-maintained Tacoma could probably handle 109 degrees, but it is presently 119 degrees in Death Valley.

    Has anybody driven their Tacoma through Death Valley or another extremely hot area at speeds of 75+ MPH with the A/C cranked? What was your experience?

    It regularly hits over 100 here in September. Late August through early Oct are usually the hottest days of the year, every year. Its weird to see how big of a new story its been all over. Maybe more unusual for the northern part of the state.

    I've never had any issues driving around town in 100+ degree heat or even off-roading in it. But the overall well being of your truck and cooling system will play a big role in that.

    Good point. However, do those trucks have almost 160K miles and burn a tiny bit of oil? A lot of those trucks look fairly new, and I can't imagine they patrol a particularly large area...

    How many miles on your truck and any issues like burning oil, etc?

    105k miles, no issues with burning oil. Only issues I had with cooling were right after I bought it, the PO had removed the fan clutch and installed dual electric fans. They sucked bad especially offroad. Threw those in the trash, new OEM fan clutch and never had a cooling issue since in any scenario

    I've got almost 52K more miles than you, but my truck only seems to burn oil when driven at speeds above 75 MPH for extended periods of time, like on the turnpike...

    That's not quite a fair comparison. Their Tacomas have been acclimated to the desert so its used to that environment.

    Can a machine really become acclimated? Either they have heavy-duty cooling or they don't. The US military brought US-spec Tacomas over to Iraq for use in combat and they did fine...
