I came across this while searching for budget rust proofing. The poster has been running plain WD-40 (semi-anually) as rust proofing in MA winters for several years on his 3rd gen 4Runner. Latest post from him was in January 2022 and apparently this stuff is still offering protection.

Thought others here might find it helpful.

I like WD-40, originally designed as water displacement, great for getting in between sandwiched metals, so it's great as a 1st treatment.

BUT Fluid Film is my go to undercoating, been using it for years now. It creeps and spreads on the area you spray it, and can stack up 1/32 or 1/16" thick if you spray it heavy, providing a sealing out of oxygen.

I have a video series showing why Tacoma and Tundra frames rust out, and I show different products including WD-40 and Fluid Film:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...-videos-tacoma-tundra-4runner-sequoia.617918/

Note: The Noxudal tar I mentioned is very poor over rust, that is virtually the same or the same product Toyota has been spraying on rusty frames past few years, it doesn't work over flaky rust. Dealers are supposed to clean and treat the rust before, but they don't.

    4 run, 2 don't
3rd Gen 4Runners were built in Japan; 1st Gen Tacoma's were built in the US (Fremont, CA)

They're not exactly the same and though 4R's are also susceptible to rust, not as much as a Tacoma

Not particularly true. Japan, Mexico, or USA. Doesn't matter. I personally know of 2 4Runners that are rustier than my Tacoma. The T100 from the 90s was also very susceptible to rust as I've personally seen it. Don't be fooled by the Japan is better myth. They mandate the same engineering and production procedures.

Correct, I think a huge reason is the sandwiched steel plates found in 1st gen Tundra and 2nd/3rd gen Tacomas. 3rd gens WILL suffer the same as the 2nd gens, virtually SAME frame

Carenut just did a vid on a 2001 camry <200K......rear is completely rusted out....
So I'd be careful with any toyota from 95 to at least 2009......

    Wash Inspect undercarriage often......any toyota....

chevys, fords, ect,....no worries,..... they'll die way before rust gets em.....

This is very untrue. In the rust belt everything rust’s. Just not quite as fast as a Tacoma frame.

Think u missed my point.....now a days......a modern chevy you're gonna have trouble to get it to last the warranty.......some late model new american cars/trucks, you're not even suppose to park em too close to your house.......

My 2019 Ford F250 didn't even make it to its first oil change (2,800 miles) before the motor started knocking and Ford bought it back under the lemon law.
Atleast I did t have to worry about it rusting away.

I feel that WD-40 would be much better than nothing. But after reading and watching a few videos, I would very much like to use the Blaster Surface Shield to coat the inner frame of my Tacos. It appears to be exactly the product I need. But the rattle can version looks to be about worthless for my project because of the male head on the can. It does not matchup with the male head on most 360 degree extended wands used to spray inside the box frame. And reportedly, the Blaster Surface Shield rattle cans tend to clog quickly. Still trying to figure out the best product for my uses and how it will be applied.

EDIT: "Repair Geek" came up with an adapter that works with the Blaster Surface Shield rattle cans and the below 24" spray can extension for spraying inside the box frame: https://www.amazon.com/Uprok-Finger-Spray-Paint-Adapter/dp/B00VXZAZ8I?

    Woolwax® 24" Spray can Extension: https://www.amazon.com/Fluid-Film-Spray-Extension-Wand/dp/B00CLUGXFI?
