Anyone have experience with an overhang like this?

About 15” past the end of the tailgate.
The second bar close to the rear is past the center of gravity so it won’t tip back when unbolted.
When it’s open, the ladder supports the back end of the tent.
My main concern is how dangerous is this to drive around with? Has anyone else driven with an overhang like this before?

Looks funny but no danger. Like hauling a bunch of 6x12's.

Good call, and this a law in some states (red ribbon, flag…)I do it for other drivers but mostly to prevent a police officer with an ax to grind to be tempted with low hanging fruit.

Not enough bandwidth on the internet to list.
I can think of numerous instances where that overhang will be a liability. Right off the top, a parking lot. You're going to have to be incredibly selective when it comes time to park. Somebody's gonna thump their melon on that overhang! Or run into it.

It would involve throwing a bit of money at it but why not go with a taller crossbar and position the bias over the cab?

And it will be some halfwit with eyes glued their phone texting in a busy parking lot who does it too. Then immediately cries wolf.:annoyed:

I always laugh when I see trucks with their tents overhanging...looks so silly. To each their own though

I’d have to get taller bed bars and run it as a roof top tent not a bed top tent.

Get a yakima overhaul and let it hang over your trucks roof instead.

Looks ugly, but no worse than hauling long wood for the lumberyard. Red flag it.

I drive with surfboards over the back of my tailgate all the time, but only from my home to the beach (short drive). I would never recommend driving around like that permanently. If I’m going any distance, the boards go on the roof.

I guess if the tent was easily installed and removed, and you’d only drive like that on your way to the campground, that would be OK.

It would still look goofy, be dangerous to yourself in the event of a collision, and be a PITA in parking lots, but temporarily OK.

Maybe, just maybe, only put it on for camping trips….. seems incredibly silly to tote that around.

Its Texas, go big and make a statement - Just spray paint/plasti dip the end Orange and get yourself a HeadAche Rack with a couple of chrome trucker girls on each side for saftey, fun and bragging rights.

I'd hate to drive around with that thing blocking the rearview mirror and hanging out.

Atralen - welcome to the boards. Thats a nice looking truck. I know nothing about these tents but hopefully it isn't too hard to put on and remove. Assume you would only put it on when you plan to go camping?
