    Aesthetics aside, some thoughts:
    • This RTT doesn't hang out any further than my Kuat bike rack and I have never been stopped by a copper in TX, CO, WY, MT, or ID saying I needed to put a light or a red flag on my bike rack. The rack probable sits a bit further than your RTT sticks back.
    • I have never been hit in parking lots with my Taco and bike rack loaded even though it sticks out further than your RTT.
    • I would be concerned about the load placed on the RTT frame when you get in and out because it is so far from the mounting points. Sleeping is no issue since your head will be towards the cab and most of your body weight will be over the mounting points. Getting in and out would be my concern.
    • They make RTTs that are designed to fold out to the side (FSR Highcountry 55 in. and others. These designs would be better for your use case IMO as they will not hang over the back.
Did you get an amazing deal on the tent and are trying to make it fit your application or did you intentionally design your setup to hang off? Sincerely curious, not looking to shit on your design decisions.

That first pic has given me flashbacks to my Statics class way back when I was a freshman working on my ME degree.

Cab height rack fixes all. No way I'd leave this as is, but to be honest, no way I am driving around with a tent on my truck all the time either. I recognize I may use my truck differently though.

Too much overhang is the real issue.

By that logic every single bed mounted RTT is a decapitation hazard to the occupants of the cab.. They are all mounted the same way. Not sure why this one setup is getting singled out.

I think for the sole fact that it protrudes off the end of the bed. In a collision where it was hit before the bumper/tailgate you have quite a bit of rtt to deal with before anything else slows down the impact. While yes any bed mounted rtt could be a risk, ones that overhang are going to pose even higher risks.

And the RTT being below the roof plane of the cab as well. Many RTT's are mounted over a bed but ABOVE the cab, which obviously provides a larger margin of safety than having it at eyeball level to cab occupants.

Is that the low profile KBVoodoo rack ? If for some reason, you decide to keep it, you should be able to move the rear bar back toward the tailgate some to lessen the stresses of the cantilever on the tent.

For example, I am running a KBVoodoo 10" high rack that is made for a long bed on my short bed. It uses the 'T' slot on the front as the adjustments and the existing bolt hole locations near the rear of the tailgate.

It's the Hi-rise bars. I have the same ones and that's as far back as it can go.

Was just going to say this, it will be moved **

Not sure what is worse; the method which this tent is mounted, the 4 space parking job, or the setup being displayed in said parking lot.

I think as far as decapitation risk. It is too the vehicle/motorcycle that's does the rear ending. It just looks like a bad idea for so many reason's listed here. Your gonna have to spend your way out of this one....

None to speak of, just enjoying it for the moment.
This setup is a really bad idea for several reasons especially since lifting it up above the roof solves everything. To each his own, but I would never consider this an option for me.

I'll leave all the reasoning out of it and just say it looks wrong.

You can tell when something is executed correctly because it just looks 'right'. Natural. Logical.

This just plain looks wrong. Mechanically.....not aesthetically. It just doesn't look right.

No ones suggested this, just cut off the portion of the rtt thats hanging over. Done.

And for those of you that dont know sarcasm when you see it, i am joking.

Agreed. You can't even get to items in the bed whilst camping...it just doesn't work.

SSO hybrid bumper, Warn winch, RCI skid trilogy, RRW sliders, everything in the cheap/free mods thread, and of course the frame recall work.
What the actual hades is going on here? You are not seriously looking to permanently mount a tent for a full size bed on a short bed truck are you? Is it engineering rated to cantilever like that? RTFM and see what they say for overhang from the mount points - the presence of bed under the supported bit or not is not important, but the amount of distance from the mount to the edge of the tent matters. From an aesthetics perspective, my personal opinion would be that it looks pretty ridiculous and would garner many mocking comments. From a safety perspective it's a big fail. Parking lots, towing, actually using your truck daily, driving it anywhere, parking ramps, people walking by will hit it 100 times more often than a trailer hitch left on your truck, cops won't appreciate it as it overhangs more than is permitted without a "oversize load" flag attached (and those are only permitted on temporary loads, not permanently disfigured vehicles), a driver that runs in to you and is injured will sue and win. Just my 5 cents worth.
