Anyone have experience with an overhang like this?

Get some lights on that thing before you drive it at night. Other than that, hey it looks great on your truck.

It looks ridiculous, unsafe, and totally in the way if you want to open your tailgate. There’s no way I would have that permanently attached to my bed without a steel barrier between it and my rear window. And then still no.

Looks ridiculous and that camp spot you found isn’t very scenic.
I’m also going to assume the manufacturer would say that’s not the proper amount of support for the tent, should probably be equally distributed and not relying on the ladder. But like others mentioned, at least flag it and maybe throw some of these on it:

That’s disappointing. Now, we’ll never know if he likes Matchbox cars and Dairy Queen!

So I don't know anything about roof top / bed top tents for trucks, so sorry if this is a stupid question? Is the OP trying to make do with an RTT that was designed for a much bigger truck model? I can't imagine this thing being designed and sold to sit like that on a short bed Tacoma with the blatantly obvious safety / liability issues that exist.

    Ignorant minds want to know!

Hey guys, OP here, not sure where to post updates so everyone will see them so I’ll just start here. First off, I’m a first timer in this sub and some of yall’s replies are hilarious. Genuinely had a really good laugh reading them.

As for the conclusion of the 21st century guillotine, I will be getting rid of the tent for a smaller one. Better safe than sorry. The back bar was supporting most of the tent’s weight, and a big concern would be going through rough terrain with basically only one bar supporting the weight of the RTT.

    To answer a few questions:

Someone said something about broverlanding. I’m not exactly sure what that is, but I camp pretty often and I was just tired of getting dicked on by inclement weather.

Why am I in a parking lot? These were taken literally 2-3 minutes after they were put on by the local company who sold it to me. They wanted to take some photos for their website.

Suggestions about mounting it higher. There are a few reasons I keep it low:

Drastically better MPG. This is important since I go camping often, but also because I live in Houston. I don’t have mountains or national parks in my backyard. I have drive at least 400-500 miles to get anywhere that doesn’t resemble my backyard.

Easier to climb up and down, doesn’t feel like I’m in a bounce house every time I move when I’m asleep, lower center of gravity for trails.

The only downside is of course, the overhang, which I will be swiftly addressing by getting a smaller RTT.

Did I get a sweet deal on this? Is that why I bought it? Yes. The guy who sold it to me just started his own RTT company and figured if everyone can drop-ship these things at a 500% markup, why can’t he? Since I was one of the first 5 people who bought from him, he sold it to me for his invoice price + $150 to cover handling fees.

Oddly enough, I get an average of 25mpg with this setup, when I normally get 19-20 on the same drive.

Rear end by a tall vehicle. I didn’t think of this initially, but if hit hard enough it would most definitely go through the back of the cab, thanks for the insight.

It also seems some people didn’t read my full post. When the tent is open and in use, the ladder holds up the back half of the tent. My main concern was driving with the overhang.

    Matchbox cars and DQ: neither
