I have a set of 265/70/17 Mickey Thompson Baja Boss A/T waiting to be put on once I get some wheels. Got 4 of them for $450 with only about 600 miles on them

I generally only use the rear locker on the most extreme stuff when a tire might get lifted off the ground, but that’s not totally accurate. Having a-trac/mts reduces the need for a locker. But even a-trac/mts is only needed in extreme situations that I doubt most people encounter. We have a 3 tier classification of trails where I live and 4wd with open diffs and decent tires could do everything in level 1 and 2 and perhaps some level 3.

If you think those are good, try some Toyo AT3, Nitto Ridge or Terra Grappler, or Falken AT3W.
My experience with those is horrible road noise, and cupping. Sounded like mud tires.

As far as snow my 2020 sr5 access cab with 265/70 16 goodyear adventure a/t tires is excellent in snow. Its way better than the gen1 4wd tundra i had with the same tires.

Here is a situation that I was using the locker (and ATRAC). My off road photography skills are lacking, so you’ll have to trust me that the front tire was a foot or more off the ground. The ground was also muddy. There’s not much chance to drive through this with open diffs unless you were to use momentum.

I’m not trying to talk you out of the SR5. I’m just trying to give you an example of what you would need to get yourself into before needing anything more than an SR5.

I had Ridge grapplers on my 22 Tundra and they were fantastic

Make sure to get rock sliders before you go off road which you might end up hitting the rocks if you are going to the trail that is filled with huge rocks in some areas.

Or are you talking about the trail which is filled with gravel all the way or dirt road like the ones in Colorado or Utah.

A/T tires are good for many trails. Stock tires are good for gravel trails... (dirt trails as well as long as it's dry.)

Muddy trails can be rough which means you may get stuck.. You need winch/recovery stuff such as straps, ropes, etc. Have someone to go with you, I mean follow you in case you get stuck and someone can pull you out with his truck.

More you have experience with off roading, more you will know what to do with your truck I mean adding mods, all that stuff like us drivers have done to our trucks. I am not finished with mine about adding more stuff to it. I have a list that I plan to add to my truck.

Ya, not that day, but on a different day at the same park (different trails) I ripped the plastic off the left side of my bumper and messed up my left taillight in two separate incidents in the same day.

I put Cooper STMaxx's and an Eaton Detroit Truetrac differential and have had no issues.

Ouch. I have scratches on bedside flare from bricks at garage corner. Good thing no scratches on bedside... only flare.

As has been posted above, the SR5 will do just fine. If, down the road you find you need a locker, just add one. Then you’re just missing the ATRAC.

I have trail rash all over the truck. There are a lot of trees and bushes where I live and you can’t avoid them all. I wish one could order a new truck in flat paint, powder coat, or anything other than a clear coat paint job. I semi regret not putting a vinyl wrap on it, but I’m not sure if that would hold up.

Yeah I have trail rash but not much, though. I went to off road about 2 years ago.

Wrap with ceramic coating would help. That I am planning to add it later but I plan to change front bumper first.

Line X would help big time... See if you have Line X shop near you... if so, go there and get a quote for whole truck with Line X.

I’m in Virginia so it’s kind of a mix of all those things. I plan on adding sliders next after I get wheels & tires put on. Not sure what I’ll get after that. Not looking to do any crazy off roading just have a little fun.

Line X isn’t removable, thus i could not recoup the cost of the fancy factory paint job if I were to sell it. My thought, impracticable I admit, is that it would be nice to skip the cost of a fragile pretty paint job and buy a truck from the factory with either a ugly cheap paint job or an extra durable coating.

Then you are good with A/T tires for light off roading. Make sure you bring recovery stuff with you in case.

I understand but you can sell it to the right buyer but the dealer won't give you top dollar for that reason. Something like "This truck is great heavy off roading.. Worry-free. Scratch proof" ad.. lol
