Can I run 5w-30 in my 2016 Tacoma?

If you go 5w30, be sure it is full synthetic. Can you get GF-6A rated oil over there?

 

I'd only run what the engine manufacture recommend. Maybe 5w-20 at best.

 

The requirement is GF5 and you can get that or GF6A in a conventional, blend, or full synthetic. Oil type really doesn't matter other than for change intervals.

 

gf5 is the obsolete minimum. GF-6A is the latest and greatest version.

Well, for his 2016 and up to 2021 the manual would say GF5. Technically outdated yes, but doesn't really matter. The manual now says GF6A for 2022. Either way you can still get 6A in conventional, blend or synthetic. Engines are not picky about oil type.

 

If OP is actually concerned with choosing better oil, going to the latest backward compatible standard (GF-6A) is an easy solution.
Not my engine, though. I've been very happy in a seriously hot climate with GF-6A full syn.

Exactly......ran 5w-30 in my 2016. At the time, the only place that had the 0-20w was the dealer, at an outrageous price.

You'll be just fine using 5/30.

 

It's just an oil rating. Look on the back of a bottle of oil at the store and see if it says GF5 or GF6A. Most oil naturally meets these specs although in other countries it may be different. That said I don't think your engine will blow up on any oil, the reason for the specs is mostly to require how much detergent they have, how much fuel economy they affect or don't, etc. It's just a set of standards. Ideal to follow if you can though.

 

Australia has historically used heavier engine oils but the operating temperature range based on viscosity FAR exceeds any temps they see.

 

Of course, I never disagreed with that. I know nowhere people live is 210 degrees.

I will say though most vehicle manufacturers, even in the Australia owner's manual usually give a sliding scale of ambient temps and what viscosity you should use to go with it. Granted that is usually based on cold temp, and not usually hot. I do know that Jeep for the 4.0L straight 6 recommended 15W-40 for Jeeps in the UAE for whatever reason.

My Nissan VQ40 service manual gave us this (very similar to the Australia 2GR-FKS scale):



Which basically says as long as you make sure you use an appropriate winter viscosity, you can use whatever the hell hot viscosity you want. Later on in the same engine they came out with a TSB saying 0W-20 is fine too though for 3 more years after that, they kept the owner's manual showing 5W-30 like it had shown all along.

End of the day I don't think any of it matters that much but I do think for someone that runs their engine hard, it may be smarter to use a 30 or 40. Not due to ambient temps, but just pure level of hard usage. I don't think an engine will imminently fail on 0W-20, plenty of proof to prove that is not the case, but I do believe a 30/40/50 is perfectly safe in the 2GR. I use 30 myself. I also like to rev mine to redline a lot and my future regear will encourage that even more. I live in Texas where it doesn't ever get below 0 so I use either 5W or 10W, whatever is on sale.

well, yea, it will be quieter. i once added a quart of 90 weight gear oil to an old vehicle and that thing ran almost silent in the 20 minutes before I realized my mistake. doesn't mean it's good for the engine. thicker oil dampens sound better but that doesn't mean it's lubricating better.

We hit 108 yesterday but today it is a chilly 98.... so don't go on about hot temps....

I remember back in the 1970's the best hash in the world came from Lebanon - but then all of the sudden you couldn't, and still can't find it.

This one I asked the car care nut pointblank, if high ambient temp, no regard for gas mileage decrease, is 5W-30 better than 0W-20 for the Tacoma V6, he recommended sticking with 0W-20, or 5W-20 because of 2GR-FKS being a more advance tech and relatively recent application that might have been designed to work with 0W-20 from the get go for optimization.

For my 2GR-FE, 2TR-FE, he did not hesitate to recommend 5W-30 because they were designed in the era of that oil grade, but recommend sticking with synthetic regardless of oil weight.

I personally have tried both 0W-20 and 5W-30 in the 2GR-FKS, there is about 1 mpg drop going stickier oil. I don't have, nor do I think anyone has long term controlled test of high mileage 2GR-FKS using 5W-30 and yielded any conclusive result that 0W-20 is worse for engine longevity.
