With the weight of my trailer and expected tow frequency, I'm putting some new KMC wheels on the truck and considering an E rating on tires. My C rated Coopers seem a little squishy but I just installed a Hellwig Helper spring set so I need to try that out and see how things feel.

I always run C on my trucks, I cant tell a ride quality degradation over SL, the slightly heavier weight of C's is cheap insurance in my mind.

I agree with you that that C's would make me feel better. But if the load index of an SL and a C are both 116 from the manufacturer meaning that each of these two tires are rated for 2756 lbs, is a C in reality any safer, other than being more durable in a sidewall puncture (not failure due to weight) situation?

And strangely enough Toyo at3' s SL has a higher load rating of 117 than its C at 116? And the SL saves 9 lbs which is a substantial advantage in many ways. Thoughts?

I always assumed the Cs had higher load rating with stronger sidewalls. If the SL meets your weight rating and your less worried about punctures then seems SL would be best.

What coopers are you running and what psi do you set them at for towing?

    Cheers.

I have the Discover AT3 LT that I've been running at 38. I need to remember and try and pump them up closer to max They'll probably be okay there. It's my wheels that concern me since they have a surprisingly low rating.

Stop worrying about the wheels. No auto manufacturers would put a wheel on a vehicle that can't handle the max GVWR.

Thanks, my oem GY wranglers are getting pretty close to needing to be replaced with 20k miles on them, they have done pretty well considering the abuse they’ve been through. If I don’t pump them up to 45psi for towing the truck feels like a boat with my 4,700lb TT back there.

I’ve had cooper at3s before and liked them, so will probably go down that route. Not sure if I should get the LT. I do prefer a stiffer ride from the tyres in general.

Have you had both before? How do they compare to each other?

    Cheers!

I haven't run the Goodyears but have well over a decade of time, closer to 2, on the Coopers on several trucks. These current models are my first LT's and only because I wasn't able to get an XLT in a 16" wheel. IIRC, the XLT's were D rated and I did a lot of towing with them but they were always aired up to near max.

I have never had a bad experience with the Coopers, be it flats, OOR, unusual tread wear when rotated. They absolutely smoked the BFG KO's I used to religiously run before them that started failing in many ways before I abandoned those high priced POS!

What's up legends?! I don't know how I missed this and a couple of other amazing threads about travel trailer towing. Well I picked up this one year old InTech Sol Horizon travel trailer. We hit the road immediately and had a memorable trip through the White Mountains NH and then east to Acadia ME. Good times. Kids and wife were stoked and we didn't want to come home.
Tacoma did a good job towing this (4000 in weight, minus whatever additional loaded up with some bikes and gear). I got a little nervous on some mountain roads and high RPMs but after other comments and feedback from others here (thank you ) I am no longer too concerned about the Tacoma's capability. I monitored the OBD most of trip, and temp never went much over 200.

I do think I need to make some adjustments to the WDH on this trailer, I'll get to that this weekend.
I definitely have some questions still about modifications to make it an even more capable tower, but it seems like there's enough info here on this and a couple of other threads for me to take a week to sort through. I hope to learn some new things and share any updates or nuggets of info that might be useful to others. Cheers.

Here, we hauled up a dirt road for some sweet mountain biking in western Maine.
