So I have some torn CV boots that I will eventually replace, but do y'all know how long a CV can last with a broken boot? I haven't done any off-roading and I've been trying to keep them clean. 99 2 door with 4x4.

I don't know how long a CV will last with a torn boot, but here are some other numbers to consider.

A parts store CV is around $120 bucks (found a cheaper one, cardone reman for $70 bucks).
An OEM Reman from CVJ is $250 on the other hand.

In short- just get a cheap pair and swap 'em in while you reboot your OEM ones.

It will fail in the worst possible place might be today next week or in a few months!

It all depends just how much road dirt and water mixes with or washes out the grease.

Not so much clean but keeping the grease where it belongs.

Do you have ADD or manual hubs? Manual hubs never engage the hubs lasts forever.

    Good Luck!!

I have manual locking hubs, will that help save the joints?

Yes as long as the hubs are unlocked your CV axles do not spin !!

Unless you shift to 4 wheel drive and lock your hubs

I would replace or reboot the CV axles as soon as the budget allows.

If your not into Hard core off roading I replaced mine with New Napa CV axles several years ago with the idea of rebuilding my original axles. So far so good.

Yeah I haven't used 4x4 in a while due to the CVs, it's just a matter of having enough time and getting the parts in.

    It's not about going off-road.

A torn boot allows the metal parts to be exposed to whatever you're driving in which in turn is really bad for your cv axles.

Just take care of it sooner than later.

Hell, cv axles are easy to find. Replace it and reboot your current one (if it's OEM).

If you have manual hubs at the very least cover the holes to prevent dirt and water from getting in there until you can reboot them.
Maybe a few layers of plastic wrap and some gorilla tape or something.

Rebooting got pretty old for me so I just carry a spare CV with me and swap ‘em after they tear and replace under warranty from o’riellys.

I carry a spare cv anyway because my truck is not my daily driver and gets off roaded often.

Mine's had a tear since I got the truck at 182k miles and I'm at 187 and it still looks about the same, no grease slinging anywhere yet. ADD truck and I've only been off-road a couple times, rarely driven in the rain.
When it gets worse I'm just going to get a parts store one, swap it in, and reboot my old one when I get the time.

Where the Truck lives makes a big difference as well.

    Dry or Damp climate .

I am not sure if a 2.5" lift is enough to cause major problems or not.

Lives in Las Vegas, so hot and dry. Also the boot is definitely torn, idk what the cause was, but the lift is suspect #1

Lift + old age of said boot = always tear
