No you aren’t understanding correctly. You can’t tell toyota what you want. Haven’t been able to for a while now. They are very LEAN and will push out what is selling most in your region. Emailing and calling will get you nowhere. You need to hop in the car and drive to all the dealers near you. Each dealer has an allocation sheet they can show you and you can either pick a truck that is close to what you are wanting or move on to the next dealer. Prices will be on the allocation sheet but not completely broke down. If the truck has started production, you will be able to see the window sticker for all the prices. Once you find the truck you like, verify there is no markup involved and place your deposit. Then you wait patiently.

My buddy is a new care manager at one of the local Toyota dealers.

To quote him: "We have to make a little money on a lot of vehicles or a lot of money on a few vehicles. They're aren't a lot of vehicles. This is a business not the Salvation Army. People and bills have to be paid".

It's just reality. And from strictly a business standpoint....they couldn't care any less whether you buy it. The next 15 people behind you will.

I'm down with what your saying. My point behind all this is wanting to know who's charging what bullshit fees and extra dealer packages I don't need or want before I spend the 2 hour trip it takes me to get to a Toyota dealership and then hours of negotiating and paperwork. One dealership automatically charges a dealer green car and paint protection plan no matter what. Got them out of the way without having to make the trip.

Unless you have to have a new truck wait.
Right now, is a bad time to go out and buy anything.
The economy needs to fix itself and it will.
If you pay more now you will kick yourself in the ass later when everything gets back to normal.

There will be an addendum on nearly every vehicle you can find at every dealership. Be thankful you're looking at a Tacoma. If you're in the market for a Corolla, Prius, Highlander Hybrid or Sienna of any kind you would be doing battle with buyers ready to stab you in the kidney for a shot at one. They simply do not exist. At my local dealership people are putting down $500 deposits on vehicles they have never seen or driven.....or will until it shows up. My buddy said he stopped taking deposits all together on Siennas because he said he was at an estimated 9 months to a year or more on a possible delivery.

Just go to you're "happy place" and don't clinch. :notsure:

In the end.....it's just money. How bad do you want the truck? Again....to quote my buddy: "Internet nerds that walk in with a months worth of researching don't have any power right now".

You either step up the market or you wait

Let me put it this way:

Dealer add-ons have a typical markup of 100% over retail. (Probably 150% or more from their cost). That add-on will get rolled into your finance, which means after interest you could easily be paying over three times what it was worth. Sometimes over five times. Sometimes more.

And no matter how much smoke they blow up your browneye, no add on will be covered by the 3/36 bumper to bumper. They come with their own, separate, often shady, warranty. No matter how many Toyota stickers they slap on them, they are not OEM, even if installed by the dealer.

There is literally no advantage to buying addon's.

I bought mine pre-pandemic, so that was before the market changed, but Capitol Toyota in Salem was great to work with and a better experience than I had looking at most of the local PDX dealers.

I will say it would be easier for you to separate the accessories from the truck purchase. At least until you get an allocation for the base truck that you want. Then you can use the accessories you want as leverage to prevent any extra markups they may try to throw at you when you get to signing day.

The M-T is probably going to be the biggest hang up in finding a truck. If you go on Cars.com and look for M-T Tacoma, 3 are listed in Oregon, and they are all PRO's, and none of them are actually at the dealer.

Unless you’re buying the xsp-x edition, they came with the coveted stick-on hood scoops.

I'm not sure about other manufacturers, but Toyota "rewards" dealerships that move vehicles fast, the faster they sell, the more allocations they get.

My local MSRP dealer, just recently became the regional number 1 volume dealer because they mostly stayed strictly MSRP vs every other scumbag dealer adding $5k mark up to even a plain Jane Camry in the region.

The sales person told me throughout the entire shortage period they have been selling more cars than they ever did since the dealership opened decades ago.

So, if a scumbag dealership decides to add mark up, then cars will sit on the lot longer, and they will get even fewer future allocations, thus they indeed end up with fewer cars to sell and they need to mark up to keep the lights on.

But an MSRP dealer is going to undercut them and get all the good publicity and also making bank too.
