Not sure how many miles were on it before they got it, but why anyone who would purchase a "new" vehicle without looking over obvious defects like that is odd.

I have 2020 that’s white. It’s my 5th Toyota and considering how mechanically reliable and easy to work on these vehicles have been for me over the years, I’ll gamble with the paint. I use my truck pretty hard if the paint has issues, I’ll just touch it up and move on. Priorities…

I didn't watch this video in its entirety, but it seems like the dealership probably put tire shine/cleaner on the tires and that stuff flipped up on the paint and stained it when the truck was driven. I did the same thing when I first bought my truck and happened to be talking with a person that told me with brand new tires and the chemicals in them plus certain tire shiners/cleaners will get into the paint on white cars if not careful to wipe it off the paint immediately.

I could be totally wrong but this seemed very similar.

Not enough bandwidth on the internet to list.
You hit the nail on the head!

Armor All Ceramic Tire Dressing. The shit is the worst and will attack only the thick paint on the rocker panels and any plastic, especially clear bra. They say you shouldn't drive for FOUR HOURS to avoid sling off. I'd just about guarantee that's what it was as I had a very similar experience.

In the first video, they sent a Toyota rep out to take a look at the paint. The rep agreed that it was a factory defect. Toyota agreed to repaint the truck at a cost of 5K. After the repaint the customers were not happy with the repaint. In the follow-up video They offered them a new TRD off road to replace their SR5 trail edition. They happily accepted.

Just a thought but has anyone thought about reporting this issue to the news to get some televised pressure on Toyota. ABC 15 reporting and consumer advocator Joe Ducey seems to do well with these kind of problems.

I think it’s unfair that they have a recall program for all of these vehicles older and newer with super white paint but a Tacoma. I’m literally on hold right now getting the same BS response from Toyota and been trying to get some help since May of this year when I started to notice it on my 2016 Tacoma off-road. Truck has been extremely well cared for. Toyotas body shop clearly says it’s a defective paint manufacturer problem. My truck is out of warrantee and of course it started to happen as soon as that happened. Never the less this should still be something they correct granted these trucks are not cheap to begin with.

Have pictures but can’t figure out how to post. It started to peel on the inside of my fenders on top near the hood and also on the front of my bed where the bed and cab meat near the plastic bed-liner. There is much worst out there it I’m noticing it getting worst on the fenders east time I wash even tho I’m not spraying directly in that spot. My truck has always been hand washed and never taken through any automatic car washes which would probably make it worst.

    Stawk as FUCK!
    Thought I’d update my experience.
Long story short, I complained on Toyota USA’s Facebook page and they told me to DM them. 2 months later my truck’s door was repainted perfectly even though my mileage & VIN was out of range for warranty coverage. They stepped up even after I tried myself at the dealership and got denied.

Ice Cap is code 040 as well. Think the name "Super White" just has a bad rap at this point.

Same here. Rear doors around the windows, front fenders near hood, top edges of bed near cab, inside frame around doors, keep an eye on your A pillars as well. Working in construction I see a lot of flaking white paint on trucks but it's usually after about 10-15 years. Toyota paint is such garbage that it goes after 2-3 years.

Thought I'd throw in my recent (September '22) experience here, as it *might* be helpful to someone.

'13 Tacoma Super White. Only paint problems (so far) is on DS fender under hood.

'14 RAV Blizzard Pearl. Which is Super White with a top coat. Both rear doors have bubbles that have popped and peeling.

No recall notice had been received on the RAV, even though I've owned the vehicle over 3 years now.

Went to local Toyota dealer with the RAV before going to my body shop, just to see if I'd get lucky. They agreed it was the typical paint problem, ran the VIN, said I was covered and made an appointment for me to return in a month (very busy and short handed)

Yesterday was my appointment time. They took the vehicle, explained the process was to do a 'tape test' where they apply a strong tape to parts of every panel. Tape removal will reveal other problem areas, as they prefer to paint everything at once rather than the potential of me returning multiple times.

They strip the entire offending panel(s) to bare metal, prime and paint. So it's a full correction, not a patch job.

Toyota provides a rental for 17 days, but I was warned that it might take 30 days for the work to be completed, again because of the backlog and staffing. I'll deal with that later; it's a Corporate thing, not a dealer thing.

Ahead of me in the turn in line was a '10 Corolla with a peeling hood and trunk, qualified for repaint as well. Interesting.

I asked why it seemed Tacoma's weren't on the recall list (based on my reading here). Was told they didn't know the answer to that, but they had submitted many to Corporate and been approved to do the work, yes, even out of normal warranty.

All I can say is there is *hope*. The dealership and in particular the Body Shop Manager may play a big role in success, but it's worth a try.

For those local or semi local to me I am using Auto Nation Toyota in Pinellas Park. Their actual body shop is at Auto Nation Ford in St Pete (the old Grant Ford location). I asked if I needed to take it there, and was told it would be transported (not driven) and stored in a secure facility.

They called Enterprise to come and pick me up and I was home in under 40 minutes from when I arrived for my drop off.

    We'll see how things go...........

*Edit for update 10/21. Received an automated update email stating the vehicle had moved from the Start department to the Disassembly department. (movement is good I think)

*Edit for update 10/27. Received an automated update email stating the vehicle had moved from the Disassembly department to the Body department.

*Edit for update 10/31. Called Corporate to ask about an extension on the 17 day rental, which expires 11/2. Negatory. Only suggestion offered was to rent a vehicle out of my own pocket and when the RAV was returned submit a claim for reimbursement. I sensed that was not SOP, just a carrot to get me off the phone. (will not be renting, we can get by w/one vehicle w/a bit of planning).
Also confirmed my '13 Tacoma is NOT 'officially' covered in this repaint/repair process, as many of you have already stated. Like you, I have no idea why when everything else is.

*Edit for update 11/1. Received an automated update email stating the vehicle had moved from the Body department to the Paint department.

*Edit for update 11/8. Received a call regarding an estimate I'd requested to have them refinish the spoiler while in the shop due to paint damage from bird droppings while in hands of the PO. I asked what they found other then the rear doors I took it in for. He kind of chuckled and said 'everything except the tailgate'.

*Edit for update 11/14. Received an automated update email stating the vehicle had moved from Paint to Reassembly. Later in day received phone call vehicle ready for pick up. Will pick up tomorrow.

*Last edit update 11/15. RAV picked up, looks great. $8,500 warranty receipt. Lifetime warranty on the work (lifetime we own the vehicle). Best of luck to all, and hoping my Tacoma 040 holds up, since it's not covered! :fingerscrossed:

They fixed my fenders but I had to raise hell, really the whole truck needs to be repainted but they aren't going to do that w/o a lawsuit sort of thing.

Can confirm, talked to the local Toyota service department about my concerns with the 040, the tech said that the issue was very real, it was in the bonding of the primer, and it was resolved in 2020-2021 model year. So anything after that should be fine. They don't know yet about 2018-2020 though...

As I have a Texas, August 2020 built truck, I'm hopeful that the paint on my truck falls under the new resolved paint process. I still feel a little skeptical that they have it solved for good tho. However, I feel bad for those dealing with this crap. I really hope Toyota finally steps up and covers all past paint failures on the 2nd & 3rd gen 040 trucks.
