Hi… I have a 2020 Tacoma that hesitates (and bogs down it seems) on a pretty consistent basis when trying to accelerate. I’ve had it in to the dealership 4 times. The first time they said nothing is wrong. The second time they said two of the plug wires were mixed up. The third time they said it was something with the transmission and they adjusted it. The fourth time they had it for the day. A master technician went through it and the top service manager also went through it. In the end they said that’s the way all third gen trucks are and basically I have to live with it. Any thoughts or similar experiences? Thanks!

For the most part, it’s true what they said. Hit the ‘ECT’ button, that helps a little, changes the power band.

Welcome to TW. Unfortunately the lackluster acceleration, bogging down, and hesitation are common for 3rd gen trucks with a factory ECU tune that is geared towards fuel economy. They try and get to the overdrive gears as quickly as possible and will commonly plug along at 1100-1200 RPM. While I obviously have a prejudiced opinion, I think you would see a significant improvement with a tune from one of several available providers. Do your research and see which one fits you best.

Call Toyota and let them know. Dealers are no help with the Tacoma driveability issues some trucks have. You’d be doing most owners of these trucks a favour, as the more people who tell Toyota, the more likely a fix will be made available. An actual fix, not just placebo ECU update TSBs.

unfortunately, for the time being, there is no fix for this.

My experience with my 2018- The three tunes I tried did improve driveability somewhat, but did nothing for the bogging or hesitation.

I almost got rear ended a couple of days ago I quickly changed lanes to avoid it and stepped on the gas. RPMs jumped pretty quickly to 6-7k but truck went absolutely nowhere…first time I’ve ever had to step on it. Not very confidence inspiring that’s for sure.

They take some getting used to, but why not you and the service manager drive a couple they have on the lot, and verify if it drives differently from others? If it does something needs fixed, if it doesn’t, you know it’s your research and test driving skills that are in need of the fixing.

Bring it to another dealer. Don't tell them about the previous dealers bs. They seem like fools. For the record we don't have plug wires. We have coil packs that are bolted down. Good luck

^ this. I would call everything they told you into question if they told me the plug wires were swapped!

I’m pretty sure Any other Toyota dealership will be able to see service, repair, warranty, recall, pet’s names, any prearranged funeral arrangements, etc if he were to take it another dealer and play dumb.

I’ve just been experiencing this too. 2020 off road and I’m a pretty chill driver so I don’t lay into the throttle often. But recently I’ve been noticing from a dead stop if I try to get moving quickly there is serious hesitation. I don’t remember the truck always being like that.

I've got a 2020. Don't know what the op means by bogging down. You step on the go petal, and these truck's move out like any other truck. There's no hesitation, or bogging. I would say if there is, something is amiss, and needs correcting. This dealer seems clueless.

What type of gas are you running ?
If you haven’t already run a few tanks of 93 or 91 octane and let us know if it’s better . I find the higher octane makes the truck be more responsive . On my truck anyways
