Do you NEED a truck or WANT a truck? I ask because I would not buy right now if you did not NEED to. The car market will correct itself, I do not know when, but it will. I am lucky, every time I bought a new vehicle it was a need. This gave me time and patience on my side. My 2017 Sport DCSB MT was 32,400 all included. I thought this was a bit overpriced then for a Tacoma. So, if you can, wait a year or so.

    EDIT: corrected my shitty typing

You really don't get that luxury in today's market. Especially here in Oregon.

Dealerships rarely ever have TRDs on the lot brand new, and if they do, they are sold or spoken for before they even arrive to the dealership. I was looking for a TRD sport for ages about a year ago and settled on an SR5. If you are trying to haggle with options at the dealership, you are doing it wrong. Anything they can add on after it arrives can be discussed but from factory, they have specific allocations that are sent to them as is.

For example: my SR5 is a 4540, which means it has the tech package and red interior and premium navigation.

Idk where in OR you are or are looking, but I'd suggest having in mind exactly what you want and paying for a reservation on it through the dealership while it's in transit because odds are that TRD will be spoken for before its unloaded from the truck

My 2003 Tacoma is starting to show it's age. I'm wanting to upgrade before she gives out... do I really need to.... probably not. I could keep putting a little more into her bit by bit, but damn these access cabs are small! I'm debating if I should buy new right now...

Don't let new car fever get the best of you! If you can wait a bit longer that might be the best thing. But if your current truck is eating you alive just to keep it running then buying now might be the best thing.

Do the math brother and do what has the least negative impact on your financial health!

I think I've discovered the magic, because I bought the exact vehicle I wanted, with zero destination charges or upcharges - just MSRP and a $500 doc fee, and they gave me a killer trade in. My secret? I bought an SR5 Access cab, auto, 4wd 6 cyl. I think I was the only person in the country who wanted it! It was cheap!

So I propose you guys find an SR5 and take all the money you saved to mod it up to a TRD Pro! Only downside is the SR5 colors are shite, no lunar rock, no lime green. But you can do a lot with $10k+ saved on the purchase.

I’ve never emailed a dealer asking for a “stock truck with options” if stock is to be without options. Seriously wasn’t trying to be a dick…trying to understand what the OP is looking for.

That's just not what's happening in this region. Dealerships are selling everything they can get there hands on. No vehicle sits around. Every one that hits the ground is presold, all with $2k - $4 addendum for various accessories and services. People are lining up and putting down $500 deposits on vehicles they have never seen or driven and won't until it arrives. Don't like? Step aside. 25 people behind will buy it.

But in the end, selling everything they get doesn't mean they're selling everything they can. My friend says their total numbers are no where near pre-pandemic levels, but their profit is close.

Exactly what I did, even tho it wasn't my intention to do so when I first set out looking for a tacoma. It worked out pretty well for me. Extra money saved went into my shopping list of Tacoma Mods. Just gotta be honest with what you really want. Do you NEED a scoop? Do you need a bed converter? Do you need leather seats or a moon roof? Are LED headlights a deal breaker? How often are you really gonna use that rear locker?

Most stuff can be added later if something is really important to you

If you are dead set on a specific truck like I was, get a list of dealers in the area and reach out to them and see about getting on a wait list. You can get an idea of costs by looking at other trucks in different colors currently listed on their websites. Keep checking those dealer's websites daily, or at least every couple days. Reach out to them when the color/model pops up you are looking for. They will all be in transit still. You will get a lot of "that one is pre-sold" responses, but keep at it. One will eventually come back as available. You will have to be ready to put $500-$1000 deposit on it to hold it for you. Then you can work out what other add-ons you want on it. It took me about a month and I was on a few different wait lists before I happen to stumble on the one I bought.

There are big changes rumored to be coming to the 2024 line up, so that may play into your decision to wait or continue searching now.

Why the heck are they adding the $1450 TRD lift kit to a Pro Tacoma anyway? Not sure if you knew, but Toyota inventory is supposed to be scarce through 2023. Also, MSRP jumped on the TRD Catback exhaust from $699 to $820. Ironically, I almost bought it a few weeks ago for $640ish.

People keep throwing around excuses about pandemic this or that but the sales volume is the same or higher than in pre-Rona years.

As we speak, Toyota's N. American sale are down 18% over this time last year. Demand is not the reason. Chocked supply chains and logistics difficulties account for all of it....as a direct result of the pandemic

And the cost is much cheaper. I almost bought one of the packages for over a grand just for the heated seats. Turns out I can add those aftermarket for half the price of the package. I've been adding and pricing mods that matter to me and so far everything has come in less than if it were priced on the invoice as a factory option.

Tacoma sales down 15% compared to 2021, down 4% compared to 2018 and up 20% from 2017. Increased demand is a portion of the problem.

I read this a lot but I haven't experienced it in my own search. Cars on lots seem to stick around, they aren't empty anymore like they were 2 years ago. Also that updating Google spreadsheet floating around here also indicates otherwise. Check the VIN numbers, sure some trucks disappear right away but tons of them are sitting on that spreadsheet for a while.

IMO unless there are actual real people bidding on a particular VIN, it is always a buyers market.
