I've been wanting to change my transmission fluid in my '12 4x4 TRD sport manual transmission, it currently has close to 105k miles so is also due for an oil change. I've been lookin at videos and heard good things about redline mt-90. What do yall recommend and how often does the fluid need to be replaced, I don't believe the previos owner changed the transmission fluid. Thanks.

Make sure you don't use GL5 fluid!

GL4 is what the transmission calls for.

Using GL5 won't cause any damage. It's just not ideal.

There's probably thousands of Toyota trucks driving around with GL5 in the trans due to bulk fluid at shops. No biggie.

For now, it's possible and affordable to get GL4, so I don't understand why any sane and rational person wouldn't just use the correct spec fluid. There are other ways to live life on the edge.

Mostly posting so that if someone inadvertently used GL5 they don't need to run out and yell at the shop etc. I agree with GL4

Just use the Toyota WS stuff. Why even bother trying to go through the hassle

I also recommend not waiting 100k next time.

WS is auto transmission fluid. Don't think that applies here.

For manual transmissions GL-5 is typically better than GL-4, BUT GL-5 doesn't play very nice with copper or copper alloys, so if the manual transmissions in our trucks have copper alloy components, which is commonly used in synchros, it's not a great idea to used GL-5. It's not going to immediately kill your tranny, but it will cause degradation over time. Not sure if that's the case for Tacoma manual transmissions, but best bet is to stick with the MFR recommendation.

I'm running it in mine and also redline gear oils in both diffs and the transfer case.

I would say 60k change intervals for the diffs, transfer case and transmission but you can stretch it to 100k as long as your fluid is staying in good shape and your not towing heavy.

The rear diff is prone to getting water in it if you drive through water due to the location of the breather vent so it's always a good idea to check the fluid for water contamination regularly.

Also while your under there check the vent hoses on your 4wd actuators, if they crack or come off water and dirt will get in and quickly destroy them.

I just made the switch to Redline (GL4) last week in my manual transmission. It's pretty smooth but I don't know that I feel much improvement over the Lucas I have been running. The Lucas I use specifically says on the side of the bottle that it's ok for brass synchros, or something like that.
I bought a gallon of the Redline off Amazon and I must say, it pumps easier and it smells much better.

Ford Motorcraft GL4 is good sauce. Redline 75w-90 is, too.
Both seemed better than 'lesser' non-boutique oils.
Any proper weight GL4 synthetic is acceptable, just change every 30k like f/r diffs and Xfer case.
Gaskets can be bought in kits, do 'em all at once.
I do trans first, so the fluid in the pump and hose is all GL4, then the Xfer and diffs with GL5 formula.
