Found a wrecked 2018 4 runner with a 4.0, low miles. Are there any differences from 2005-2018? I believe they are the same 1grfe motor. Looking to do a motor swap with a 2008 or newer 4.0 due to head gaskets

A lot of the internals are going to be the same so you could rebuild your taco motor with it if need be I suppose. What's wrong with the 05?

It wouldn't be a Tacoma motor because 2018's used the 3.5 Liter V6. It has to be a 4Runner motor - and there are lots of differences there.

The motor is from a wrecked 4Runner. That’s why he’s wondering about the difference. He wants to put that 4.0 in his 05 taco.

The 2018 4Runner is Dual VVT
You’ll need more than the engine. And as far as I know, no one has done the swap. It’s not cost effective.

Like people said. Won’t work. 4Runners 2010 and up come with dual vvti and then they also have the secondary air pump. So there are more pumps for that, and the headers have extra tubes attached to them.

the Tacoma is a single vvti engine. Your best bet would be a 2003-2009 4Runner engine. Fj cruiser that is 2009 or older.
    Or a 2005-2011 Tacoma.

Thanks for the responses! My 05 has been running on a bad head gasket for over a year now, I’ll pour water in the radiator and make it 10 miles before she’ll need more. Assuming I did further damage by continuing to drive it. But it’s been parked for some time and it’s super clean, long bed crew cab. The way truck prices are i wouldn’t mind fixing and keeping the truck. If anyone knows any reliable used engine spots in Florida, don’t be afraid to let me know!

Had the same issue with my 4Runner.

just look on Facebook, Craigslist, eBay, everywhere. Engines were about $2500 when I was looking for one.
Ended up finding a 2008 fj crusier engine with 80k miles for $1200 on offer up

So instead of replacing the head gasket you just wanna do an engine swap? I mean you can probably get a new gasket, head studs, coolant and timing valve gaskets for <$200 and you only have to pull half an engine that way

I’ve had a couple mechanics tell me I’m rolling the dice of the bottom end of motor having damage

When was the last time you changed the oil? Was it milky sludge? How much is that t4r? You could drop the oil pan and probably scope out most of the block and at least get an idea of what kind of shape it's in. Imo if what you have is salvageable, it'd be a heck of a lot cheaper and easier to just fix what's broken. If you are going to go through all the work of an engine swap, a gently used, stock 1gr wouldn't be what I had in mind lol

i am very good at finding items and people.

i had my engine swapped in 2 days for $500. i just had to bring the oil and coolant.
im sure you can find people like that as well if you try hard enough.

Completely different motor... still a 4.0, but different internals, different block model number, different oil filter location and type( uses internal canister on bottom), and dual vvt-i to name a few things

Maybe it's just me but this sounds like a great excuse for a LS swap.
