1999 SR5 4WD with about 110K miles. The seller only had it for about a year and didn't sound like he did much. What should I get done right off the bat? This is what I was thinking:

    • Change oil
    • Change air filter
    • Change transmission fluid
    • Replace timing belt
    • Add OEM coolant (overfill tank is low)
What else are "must do" for a car of this age/mileage with an unknown maintenance history?

There are many threads covering this topic, so a little searching and reading should be in your future.

But the primary considerations are going to be the Lower Ball Joints (LBJs). They are a known weak part, and if you don't know when they were last replaced, or what brand of part they were replaced with, then it's the safe move to replace them with OEM ball joints.

RE the coolant- Unless you are sure there is Toyota coolant then you should consider a flush. Also, if you're considering the timing belt, also consider the water pump and thermostat- and then the coolant flush.

In order of importance, the LBJs are the top priority.

At 110k the timing belt isn't high up there as if it was done, it should have been around 70k. Check the timing belt cover- sometimes the shop will leave a sticker.

As for the transmission- do your research there. I'd suggest a few drain and fills spaced out over a few hundred or thousand mile intervals.

There is a member here (and on other toyota forums) who has a great you tube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9EMiD9KPy61kJ6hdXcbjxA Hes created a ton of excellent videos which detail out many of the standard maintenience items. Additionally, another member here also has tons of equally great write ups on his site: https://adventuretaco.com/

Thank you for the replies. I tried searching but couldn't get the right keywords. This being my first 4WD, is there anything I should do for that system?

Wouldn’t be a bad time to check ball joints

Nope- 2.4 and 2.7 have a timing chain - no belt. There are some I4 suggested items as well- I believe adjusting the valves.

You can find an online copy of the FSM, I wouldn't suggest investing in a paper copy of the manual. "1st gen FSM pdf" should do the trick.
