My Timeline

Maybe this will help some future tacoma owner. 22 TRD sport 6mt AC army green. Sport package( heated seats,power adjust,premium audio)

June- started calling dealers locally( northern, il). Most said truck would most likely be impossible to get allocated. Better chances getting double cab allocation. Still put a 2500 refundable deposit on allocation.

August- hadn't heard back from local dealer and started taking matters into my own hands. Started looking at autotrader or cars.com for matches. Found a couple meeting criteria. AG TRD sport 6mt. Found a dealer in Michigan that would sell to me.(apparently was doing them a favor because they thought it would be hard to sell). Placed a 500 non refundable. Truck already was built and got Vspec sheet. Freight took a long time and eta came and went and was delayed about 2 weeks.

I got notications on the app when vehicle got off train. At logistics park. Loaded on hauler, and off hauler. Or atleast thats the timeline I put together and it checks out. @Rod03 helped alot with the uncertainty and i recommend people tip him because the anxiety he relieved was priceless when dealer was not really good at communicating.

My advice to anyone that finds this. Don't place all your eggs in one basket and play the allocation lottery. Maybe I got lucky, but I also expanded my search area. I had alot of non negotiable. See if you can find the truck and not wait around praying dealer will get allocation, if possible.

 

Beautiful truck! My story has some similarities but I’m saving it until the final chapter is done (< 2 weeks I hope).

 

Fight the good fight! It definitely was a long battle consisting of, checking the app constantly, checking here, constantly, daydreaming, and just general excitement/anxiety. Did have a moment of panic when my truck showed up on the dealers website and wouldn't return my call. I knew it showed up on Saturday because of alerts but didn't get a call back til Wednesday. Thought maybe they were gonna sell it from under me. But they did not.

 

These deposits are crazy. Thousands of dollars and non refundable how is that legal. My local dealers ask for 100-500 fully refundable.

 

That’s apparently common for advertising. I called on many website listings that were already sold. Mine showed up on my dealerships website just the week (VIN matches) and it’s still 1,000 miles away on a train.

 

The 2500 was refundable.the reasoning for the large amount apparently was that they value their allocations and don't want people placing deposits everywhere and serious buyers only. But they gave it back no questions asked. They knew the truck was probably impossible to get.

 

Likewise. My deposit on a non-existent truck was fully refundable. Once I found an actual truck I needed a non-refundable deposit to reserve it. That said $2,500 is wild, mine was just $1,000.

 

And if you decide you don’t like it when it comes your out that money ? Even 1000 is nuts.

 

Actually I’m not 100% sure it’s non-refundable. Just assumed. I’m flying to go get it which is nuts to begin with so no way I’m changing my mind.

Yep, my dealership had me come out to speak in person on the availability of a specific truck they had already committed to another buyer. That’s how they got me in the door to deal on other allocations they had weeks out.

Mine was just freshly listed on their website with the perm VIN this week when it’s status changed to in-transit . I know from a system screengrab they shared it shows as presold to me so I’m not sweating it being sold from under me but it’s kind of weird to see it look like it’s totally open for sale on their website.
