I don't think it's dangerous to operation of the vehicle, but there will be a time when you forget and back it into a poll.

The wise course to balance the vehicle would be to get cab height rack and send it forward over the cab by 12" or 18".

Tacoma DCSB's force you to load items with CoG behind the rear axle, do your best to limit doing that.

Also those bed bar uprights look weak especially for how far the tent overhangs the rear bed bar, like the rear bed bar is in the middle of the tent, no bueno

Thank you! You said it more tactful than I could’ve. I refrained from replying to that post, but for the life of me… people need to stop letting others live rent free in their head! Why the fuck would a fad, or another person’s activities bother anyone? Freedom! It’s only as real as you want it to be I guess.

OP… the look of that hanging over the back of my truck just wouldn’t work for me.
If it works for you and is safe

    :thumbsup::thumbsup:

Kind of funny, my last wreck was on Beltway 8 just south of Clay. I got rear ended by a truck.

The other guy immediately hopped out and started crying. By that I mean a full on snot-nosed bawl, as if someone stomped on his childhood dog. I asked him if he was alright. He said " man, I just left the bosses office, he just got done telling me that if I wrecked his truck one more time, I was fired..."

Yeah some things are for the best, buddy. But that's Houston for you. Glad to hear you're shortening it up.

Aside from the obvious issues with the tent sticking that far past the back of the truck, I'm also worried about properly supporting the tent.

It looks like at least 3 feet of the tent towards the back are completely unsupported. Tents are very structural sound.

You need a rack that covers the length of your bed, and it needs to be about 22" tall so you can get the tent over the cab. You need to center the tent on the rack.

The people will hit you argument is nonsensical. My bike rack sticks out more than this RTT.n I have never been hit, never had a cop stop me, have never been sued etc. If your argument were true people would never put accessories in their hitch receiver.

I would get a cab rack, or a full size bed rack, or canopy..... Definitely something different

SSO hybrid bumper, Warn winch, RCI skid trilogy, RRW sliders, everything in the cheap/free mods thread, and of course the frame recall work.
That's not quite how it works .... those darn airplanes that
So why is it the law for putting an indicator on loads that extend out of the bed? Because the hitch is expected to have things on it. It's down low and causes only car problems in an accident. People tend to watch the ground when walking and can see the hitch mess. Objects hanging out of the bed are a danger to occupants in an accident. People will more likely walk into an object at face height that is unexpected, causing a real injury. Your "i yse my hitch, therefore any junk extending from your truck is ok" argument is a false comparison.

The only thing that would ever hang out of my hitch is the ball too.

Sorry, your argument doesn't negate the concern over this truck's overhang aimed at the passengers vs your bike rack aimed at your axles.

4 feet is the DOT approved limit. Anything more than 4 feet requires an indicator. OP's RTT does not hang off 4 feet.

    ok, i've got to ask.

how many vehicles have a passenger compartment that is within 2' of their front bumpers?

i could rear end that in my gmc savana work van and still be fine...

I wasn't so much thinking of the rear-ender, but the rear-endee.

    perfect example.

the older semi's have close to 6-8' worth of front end
    [IMG]

the newer trucks are probably closer to 4-5'
    https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Et-74oQVkAI6h1H.jpg:large

the only truck style that honestly has an issue is the old flat-fronts, which few are still running, and have a number of their own driver safety concerns
    [IMG]

my point is, a 2' additional overhang of a fabric/fiberglass/composite assembly is really not a problem with the majority of vehicles on the road.

but to further drive the point, because i've got the time, crumple zones are also drastically different. semi's don't crumple much at all when hitting a passenger vehicle.

this video is a perfect example. it knocks the steer axle out of the semi, but the frame rails are obviously still very much intact. the stopped pickup maybe intruded 3' of that 6-8' front end at a 0mph vs. 55+mph collision.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ifcmyjnZxpQ

an overhanging tent setup just means the semi truck gets a punctured radiator. of which is still going to be the least of his problems once the state troopers come around for the investigation.

My original point was that a trucker who's 18 hour no-doz pill binge finally caught up to him, would smash into that tent and yeet it straight through the Tacoma cab. Again, I can't control and don't care about how the guy doing the smashing kills himself.

I can, however control how I load my own vehicle, and would not be willing to load any object that is line-of-fire pointed towards my own noggin.

    That's my line of thinking.
