New technology should be better than what it is replacing, machines are supposed to make our life easier. EVs aren’t quite there yet, but one day they will be. Remember hand held corded power tools…

I agree completely but the present roll out, as you say " isn't quite there yet" ...

    https://www.epa.gov/coalash/coal-ash-basics

Why does EPA regulate coal ash?
Coal ash contains contaminants like mercury, cadmium and arsenic. Without proper management, these contaminants can pollute waterways, ground water, drinking water, and the air.

The need for federal action to help ensure protective coal ash disposal was highlighted by large spills near Kingston, TN and Eden, NC which caused widespread environmental and economic damage to nearby waterways and properties.

Compared to natural gas, coal is and always will be dirty no matter how much it is ‘Scrubbed’.

Be fine as a commuter, the thought of charging at home is very appealing as I have grown to hate going to gas station. Could probably make it work for my camping trips with careful planning. Problem is I am the type that gets to a crossroad and flips a coin. I carry extra fuel because of my wanderlust. :)

Don’t think they’ll be any better for the environment though, still need to rape the land for resources. Might clear the air up a bit, dunno…currently here in Idaho it is looking like Bangladesh out there with all the wild fires, and those have been “naturally” caused by lightning.

What I typed was "burn cleaner". That would be leaving less toxic residue. We NEED to find those answers NOW and NOT cause new environmental issues which I am led to believe EV's will do.

    But I'm old...

And this is what most don't understand. EV and infrastructure are in their infancy. They think all 275 million cars will be plugging in to charge at the same time in the next 10 years and there will be blackouts all the time. Battery tech will not change and you can't go to the next state without running out of charge. Just uninformed nonsense.

The 6 man trim crew on my current job showed up without a compressor. Every tool except their table saw are battery operated. Nail guns, track saws, miter saws, jig saws, multi tools, and sanders all battery powered.

When air conditioning first became viable a lot of people pushed back, I think the argument was god intended us to be hot so its sinning to use A/C.

I cant tell you how many times I have heard bitching about welding machines going to digital inverters. They pretty much made the change 20 years ago and people still whine that they want just two knobs and a machine that weighs 300 lbs, because thats a sign of quality. No shoebox sized welder can touch the old transformer machines. They are 99.99% full of shit. There are some very good welding old welders, but its hard to find an inverter no matter how cheap that wont run with the best transformer of 20 years ago.

My ex-father in-law used to go on about how much better cars were through the late 40's and 50's than they were in the 60's and 70's. I didnt buy it then, I dont buy it now.

One of my friends bitches about LED light bulbs.

Electrics, friends who have ridden the motorcycles say the power is unreal. Once they develop the ability to get 500 miles out of a charge I will be glad to make the switch completely.

Corporations could offer free charging at work as a perk, like insurance.

I think it was one of the Saudi oil ministers who, when asked why Saudi Arabia was investing in renewable energy said, the stone age didnt end because they ran out of stones, it ended because they found a better way.

There are a few 500 mile EV's out but very expensive. The highest mileage EV motorcycle I think is 105-110 mile range.

Modern cars are much more reliable than old cars as I've driven both (because I'm old...).

However modern cars are not as easily repaired because of their complexity.

In reality, few can/have the will/have the skill to work on any modern car (gas, diesel, B-EV, PHEV, Hybrid) aside from brakes/belts/suspension/plugs/swap electronics boxes.

That’s the limit of the work I do on the my 2006 Toyota and 2015 Honda. Beyond that, into the shop. New cars tend to be more reliable, they will continue to be less ‘repairable’ with every new generation. With the EVs I might just be able to live in the ‘swap parts’ part of the world that comes with them.

Other side of that coin is, they rarely need work.

Every house in my neighborhood with a Tesla (and one electric 4-door Mustang) also has solar panels. There’s no drain on the grid for them to charge their vehicles.

Y’all making a shitload of noise about 12 years of change that haven’t even happened yet. Relax.

Not sure if the planet can be saved, or shall I say can the human race can be saved, since the planet will be here long after we are gone. We could argue all day long what the best/cleanest source of energy is, but the real problem is us. At what point can’t the Earth sustain humans? The debate has been going on for 1000s of years.

    Long read, but…
