Every time I see someone with success using this method I get jealous. I tried so hard with no luck, same with another method and a brass hammer. Eventually I got lucky and found a pair of disassembled outers, ready to drop onto LT axles.

Mine is on the JD +4. It is actually a second gen but I doubt that has anything to do with it. Did you try driving the truck after the spring swap? The front end on these wont just settle without driving/steering it a little. Im running no preload (at the adjuster nut) on the passenger side and 2 turns on the drivers side.

You just need a friend with a lathe lol. A buddy of mine had my shafts drilled out in about 30 seconds a crack. 1" bit and as soon as it gets to the clip groove, they pop loose. Doesn't even hurt the clips.

Get a good piece of pipe, longer than axle shaft.
Take axle apart until all is
left is axle and hub side joint.
Slide tube over axle to where its touching the "sun gear" of the joint.

While holding pipe, not cv joint, drop on a hard surface from about 2 to 3 feet straight down.

This pipe works perfectly for this and if anyone wants to borrow it I can mail it to you. Just give me 10$ for shipping

So your saying shock fully extended with the 16" springs if you unscrewed the adjuster all the way up to the top you had about 1/2" of play?

If that's the case why on earth would you put a longer spring on there? Lol

8" stroke shock typically needs a 16" spring.

"left is axle and hub side joint." Red circle?

“Slide tube over axle to where its touching the "sun gear" of the joint.” blue circle?

Depends on what CO config the kit is spec'd for, I've had two kits now that use a standard rod end, raised lower coil seat and an 18" spring fits easily with zero loading needed. You can see that there are a few threads exposed at the top, that is an 18 / 650 Eibach :

No, the threaded portion stays facing up when your dropping it. Worst case the joint comes off axle shaft and falls on the ground. But yes, taping would save any trouble.

Because that was a 700 pound spring. The new ones are 600. There are 2-3 people here running 18” lighter springs on an 8” travel shock.

My assumption, which I confirmed after a lot of reading, was I could either run a 600# pound 16” spring with two inches of preload or an 18” 600 pound spring with no preload. This makes sense to me, but I guess I’ll wrong.
