Firing up the ol' analysis-paralysis machine with a suspiciously loose CV. Video here:

the in and out play doesn't concern me as much but its the vertical movement that does. I do plan on a 2 inch lift or 1.5 even so im wondering if i should just get the ECGS plain bearing done now. Unless of course this amount of play is normal then ill just leave it be.

I'm not sure if that amount of play will be an issue after a lift, but I do know that installing the bushing will tighten it up significantly. When installing front shocks/springs you will be 1/3rd of the way there anyway, why not go further and just pull the axle and install the bushing at that time?

Tacomas and 4Runners all have that amount of play from the factory. Seems weird, but isn’t a problem unless you put in a lot of lift.

I have 1.5” of lift with no ECGS and no problems.

Every tacoma does this. Search it on here.

The bushing fixes it, but is not necessary unless lifted.

That looks completely normal, there's always a little play. The videos Ive seen where a new needle bearing or ECGS bushing was needed, the movement was much worse

That looks good to me. Looks completely normal.

Here is mine before I did the bushing.

After the bushing, there is still some play. Maybe 1/2 as much or less. You’ll never get all the play out of it. You don’t want to either. Gear oil is thick, it needs room to flow between the bushing and CV.

I guess if you are planning on lifting the truck, you might as well do it. The closer you get to, or surpass, 2”. The more likely you’ll need it later. It’s just part of lifting these IFS trucks.
