Why not public land hunt? You can totally get it done on public. I do every year with a bow.

Couldn't find a more appropriate spot for this so here goes. I just put up @2000ft of 5 strand wire around the property to keep the cows out ..now this.

A couple nights ago a group of about 12-15 javelina approached the back patio at night. I was outside chilling with some low music and a whiskey. The dogs (Jack Russel and a boxer) alerted me. The jack stayed on the patio growling but the boxer went in before I could grab her. The group scattered, except for one big bastard that squared off. I cave manned some rocks and got loud, scared the dog more than the pig. Living in Mexico, all my guns are back in VA. Need a recommendation from you TX guys on crossbows (legal down here). Obviously don't need bait ..lol. TIA

Pic from this morning. They're out during the day as well20220805_085621.jpg

Javelina's are not invasive nor do they destroy habitats like their wild boar relatives that they look like. Unlike hogs that are kill as many as possible on sight, I would advise leaving Javelina's alone unless you just really want to eat one.

I don't want to eat one. I'm more worried about the dogs on the property with no way to exclude the javelina. Thanks for the insight. Maybe I'm over reacting to how the biggest pig squared off on the dog. If I see any aggression beyond that it will change my outlook!

If they are showing aggression and you have pets I would definitely just kill the Javelina's before one gets to froggy with one of your dogs. They can be aggressive and a well placed bite lethal for one of your pups. They usually keep to themselves unless they are being intentionally fed, but wild animals aren't always predictable, and dogs can be antagonistic. With dogs antagonizing they won't hesitate to defend themselves and it can all happen so quickly.

What are some of yalls tips to hunting on public land? I've never hunted on public land in Texas and everything I have seen and heard does not paint a enjoyable or fun time. Regardless I'm trying to expand the opportunities to stock the freezers this year.

haha that's what I've heard for opening/closing weeks and weekends luckily I have a flexible schedule. I'm looking into a saddle hunting set up so that I can stay relatively mobile in a situation like that.

I bowhunt public land (successfully) and don't have that experience. That being said I am usually further in since I saddle hunt and I don't hunt certain WMAs during rifle season which greatly limits my encounters.

I'm doing my research into a saddle set up to be able to be able to move around and go farther into some locations as I don't mind a good hike. Looking at the public land booklet and there is not many areas of a sizable acreage but I've come up with a game plan to essentially hunt each region of Texas to see what I prefer.

I've anecdotally heard it's been a light year from the guys I know at my local sporting shop, but i'm not a deer hunter so can't say personally.
